COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tucson is renovating Jacobs Park & the Ochoa Soccer Complex by updating sidewalks, adding a new playground and accessibility features; the renovations are planned to be complete by summer to boost safety for all users.  KGUN 9

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Catalina Highway was closed on Jan. 9 due to congestion up to Mount Lemmon, as reported by the Pima County Sheriff's Department — a crash near Windy Point Vista at milepost 14 caused the delay, though no injuries were reported and the road reopened at 3:15 p.m.  KVOA
  • The Tucson Fire Department said a vehicle backed into a gas line on Jan. 9 near Stone Avenue, causing Rodger Road in midtown to be closed while crews secured the scene; no injuries were reported.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new posthumous song featuring Josiah Santos — a UA student whose voice lives on after a fatal accident — was released Friday. Meow or Never A Cappella plans to compile more recordings for an album to honor his talent.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona State School for the Deaf and the Blind is in talks with Amphi School District to use a closed campus that will cut maintenance costs and better match enrollment needs. The school will open the new facility in August + relocate IT equipment to boost classroom time.  KGUN 9
  • The University of Arizona’s Pandora satellite is set to launch on Sunday at 6:19 a.m. from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, with its 18-inch telescope ready to study exoplanet atmospheres.  KOLD News 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pima County is hosting its 21st annual Grease Recycling Collection event today to turn used cooking grease into biodiesel in partnership with Tucson company Grecycle. Residents can drop off grease at six local sites, including a community college and a wastewater facility.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pima County Board of Supervisors voted on Jan. 6 to allocate over $1.86 million from an opioid settlement to six local groups focused on prevention and recovery—efforts aimed at reducing overdose deaths and supporting community health.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson drivers should expect lane restrictions on I-10 between Kino Parkway and Alvernon Way from Jan. 11 to Jan. 17, as announced by the Arizona Department of Transportation; additional lane limits on nearby roads will last until April (detours are advised).  KVOA
  • Marana town council approved rezoning Tuesday, Jan. 6 for a large-scale data center expected to bring $5 billion in investment, $145 million in tax revenue, and over 4,200 construction jobs (while community members voiced concerns about energy and water use).  KOLD News 13
  • Trico Electric Cooperative will perform work in Marana from Jan. 20 to Jan. 23 near the intersection of North Sanders Road and West Emigh Road from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and residents should expect road closures and use posted detours (for safety).  KVOA
