COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tucson Subaru donated over 500 new winter coats to nonprofit Youth On Their Own to help homeless youth stay in school, CEO Elizabeth Slater said + the donation eases winter weather challenges in Tucson.  KVOA

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Tucson Electric Power said about 2,400 Eastside customers are without power today because a vehicle damaged equipment. The outage stretches along East Speedway from Kolb to Harrison and up to neighborhoods south of East Tanque Verde.  KGUN 9
  • Over the weekend, a three-ton boulder fell onto Sabino Canyon's paved road after heavy rain and strong winds loosened dirt, damaging the trail and nearby cacti; crews plan to remove it piece by piece as officials urge hikers to be cautious.  KGUN 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nathan's Famous opened its first Tucson location today on North Fourth Avenue (628 N. Fourth Ave), making it the state's only operating store. The fast food outlet, known for its annual hot dog-eating contest, serves hot dogs, burgers and chicken sandwiches.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local metalheads are hosting Mosh for Mental Health—a kid-friendly benefit show at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at 191 Toole that is their first event since COVID-19 to raise funds for Casa de los Niños supporting kids and families facing trauma.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The Downtown Tucson 2026 Haiku Hike is accepting haiku entries until Feb. 2 (8 a.m. to 11:55 p.m.) in the downtown area. Poets may submit one entry with up to three haikus, and winners from 2025 cannot participate this year.  Downtown Tucson

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amphitheater Unified School District plans to close four elementary schools after classes end in May because fewer students are enrolled; the board votes on the plan today and students will move to new schools next fall.  Tucson Sentinel
  • University of Arizona students are testing Alaskan kelp as an additive in poultry feed using a 25-foot solar drying tower. The project, funded by the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, uses only sun energy to dry produce + kelp and reduce food waste.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Reid Park Zoo in Tucson is accepting unwanted holiday lights for recycling in partnership with Recyco, Inc. Residents can drop off broken or working string lights at the zoo entrance until Jan. 31 (additional Recyco drop-off sites are available around town).  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Bureau of Reclamation released a draft environmental impact statement Friday that sets new operating guidelines for Lake Powell and Lake Mead, with a comment period ending on March 2 + basin commissioners work to build consensus before current agreements expire at year-end.  Tucson Sentinel
  • After almost six years of construction, Tucson’s Downtown Links Improvement Project nears completion — crews are finishing the new overpass, underpass and roadway paving to improve connectivity and safety downtown. A ribbon-cutting celebration is planned for spring.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Pima Animal Care Center is hosting a free spay and neuter event for outdoor, unowned cats from Feb. 13 to Feb. 15 at its facility at 4000 N. Silverbell Road where residents can get microchips, vaccines and ear tip services. Assistance with traps or carriers is available via email.  KVOA

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Tucson started new housing rules on Jan. 1 that let duplexes, triplexes, and townhomes be built on single-family lots to boost affordable options. The move has sparked debate among residents (some worry about design changes) while officials say it will increase supply.  KVOA
