CULTURE NEWS

  • Hotel Congress will host Dillinger Days on Jan. 16 and 17 with reenactments, live entertainment, historical tours (including a 1930s-themed speakeasy with a best-dressed contest and whiskey-tasting) and a vintage car show, with proceeds benefiting the Greater Tucson Fire Foundation. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Silver prices have surged in Tucson as sellers cash in on old jewelry and coins today, with values climbing from $30 to between $87 and $89 per ounce amid rising industrial demand for solar panels (and batteries). EDUCATION NEWS

  • Aspiring lifeguards can take a free swim test at Catalina Pool on Feb. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. offered by the City of Tucson; passing the test is required to join the Star Guard Lifeguard Class, which leads to job opportunities with starting pay of $16.75 per hour.  KVOA
  • Parents linked to Copper Creek Elementary in Oro Valley are urging the Amphitheater School District to reconsider closing the school as a governing board vote Tuesday night may end a long-established community hub for students + families. They say the move would disrupt an inclusive support system developed over years.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Kris Mayes resisted TEP's planned 14 percent rate hike at a Tucson town hall today, saying the Project Blue agreement lacks full details while the utility defends its request based on past system investments.  KGUN 9
  • Former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich died at 59 on Tuesday, his family confirmed. He served from 2015 to 2023 and is remembered by state officials, leaving behind his wife Susan and two daughters.  KOLD News 13
  • Tucson trash and recycling collections will run on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19 while city offices close; the Los Reales Sustainability Campus and landfill will remain open (services apply to all city customers).  KVOA
  • Tucson officials say the Downtown Links Improvement Project (nearing completion) will add updated walkways and lighting to improve pedestrian safety downtown. The enhancements are expected soon to boost connectivity in the area.  KVOA
  • FEMA has released preliminary flood maps for Pima County covering Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita and Tucson. The maps show updated flood hazards that assist local officials, contractors and homeowners, and residents and businesses have a 90-day appeal period from Jan. 29 to Apr. 29.  KVOA
  • A proposed data center in Marana faces delays as Arizonans for Responsible Development filed paperwork to launch a referendum on town council-approved rezoning of 600 acres near Luckett and Hardin Roads. The referendum needs 1,300 signatures by Feb. 6 to reach the August ballot.  KVOA
