COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tucson Appliance Company owner Chris Edwards has been named grand marshal for the Tucson Rodeo Parade, set for Thursday, Feb. 26. The parade will follow a new route beginning at South 12th Avenue and West Drexel Road before turning north to end at the Rodeo Grounds (Irvington).  Tucson Sentinel

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Tucson Fire Department (TFD) responded to a mobile home fire in the 3900 block of North Campbell Avenue last Thursday, Jan. 22, reporting that a cat died during the incident.  KOLD News 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jim Click Automotive Team announced on Jan. 20 that it reached an agreement to sell its 16 dealerships to Gee Automotive Companies (10 in Southern Arizona, six in Southern California), and the sale will close later this year pending conditions while retaining existing brands and employees.  KVOA
  • Frontier Airlines launched a new nonstop service linking Tucson International Airport and Salt Lake City on Jan. 22; the route runs twice a week with promotional fares starting at $49 until Jan. 27 for select travel dates through April 9, and the airline plans First Class seating in early 2026.  KVOA
  • Slice & Ice opened its second location on Tucson’s east side at 6810 E. Tanque Verde Road, with owner Ed Irving (one of eegee's founders) announcing on Facebook Thursday morning that delays were over, and the new shop will serve pizza, sandwiches, salads, and Italian ice.  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona lawmakers are working to renew Proposition 123 to address school funding and teacher shortages by proposing bills that may boost teacher pay – proposals that could go to voters in November.  KOLD News 13
  • The University of Arizona’s Campus Pantry offers free groceries & snacks for students & staff facing food insecurity during spring semester, serving the Student Union Memorial Center on Tuesday 3-7 p.m., Wednesday & Friday 12-3 p.m. and the Health Sciences Library on Thursday 12-2:30 p.m.  KGUN 9
  • Students at the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind sent a letter to Governor Hobbs and state leaders saying they object to relocating blind and visually impaired students to public schools (risking the loss of essential support) after a decision to close their campus.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at the University of Arizona College of Medicine (Tucson) are developing a copper-based drug to fight bacteria, including drug-resistant MRSA. They published breakthrough findings last month in mSphere and will seek clinical trials after licensing the compound.  KVOA
  • The National Kidney Foundation of Arizona will host a free screening event tomorrow, Jan. 24 to assess kidney, heart, and diabetes risks at the Ott Family YMCA (401 S. Prudence Road) from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The program aims to raise awareness about kidney disease.  KVOA
