COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pickleball tournaments will soon benefit Tucson nonprofits + one event will promote awareness about narcolepsy while another supports local kids on the south side.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Local groups in Tucson offer free and discounted food boxes & produce packages this week. Interfaith Community Services begins distributing food boxes today at South Tucson Housing Authority from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and the Humane Society will provide free pet food on Feb. 1 from 1 to 4 p.m.  Tucson Sentinel
  • After Tucson Pride announced its closure, local community members are meeting to plan new initiatives to keep the inclusive spirit alive (final details pending).  KOLD News 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Three people were detained by immigration enforcement near (Drachman Montessori Magnet School) last week in Barrio Santa Rosa, leaving local residents fearful and altering daily routines while officials confirmed the detainees had proper documentation.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson Pink Pistols offers self-defense classes that teach firearms safety and martial arts to queer and trans residents, helping them boost confidence and feel secure. Founded in early 2025 by trans woman April Gendill, the program supports members who seek to feel more connected & empowered.  Tucson Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tucson Unified School District has been flagged as one of the state’s highest financial-risk districts by the Arizona Auditor General (report released 20 minutes ago). Officials have not yet shared plans for addressing the concerns.  KOLD News 13
  • More than 600 Arizona math teachers gathered at Tucson High this past weekend to address low math scores amid a retention crisis (state reports show significant teacher turnover).  KOLD News 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arizona Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith, and Family awarded $180K to five organizations to enhance the state’s response to child abuse in Pima County. The funding (including $50K for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southern Arizona) will improve agency coordination and updated protocols across the region.  KOLD News 13
  • Pinal County is exploring an 18-mile non-vehicular multi-use trail in Saddlebrooke that may link to Pima County's Chuck Huckelberry Loop to offer safer cycling for residents; county officials presented the plan at Desert View Performing Arts Center today but noted the project timeline remains undetermined.  KGUN 9
