  • Hundreds of volunteers conducted an annual survey early this morning on Tucson streets to help the Tucson Pima Collaboration to End Homelessness gather data for planning services for unhoused residents — teams offered $10 McDonald's gift cards for survey participation, which supports local and federal resource efforts.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson's Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase kicks off today and runs through Feb. 8 with 56 shows drawing collectors, sellers, and enthusiasts worldwide — the event features a 440-pound jade boulder at Zaza Gems and 32,000 pre-registrations.  KVOA
  • Tucson artist Carra (Mamma Coal) Stasney will host her sixth annual Dolly Parton tribute at La Rosa on Saturday, Jan. 31, celebrating the singer’s 80th birthday with local performers. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.  Tucson Weekly

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Amazon and UPS recently announced job cuts that may affect Tucson workers, prompting Pima County to offer job assistance. The county will host a Career Fair on Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kino Event Center and provide One Stop services (for dislocated workers).  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • YouTube star MrBeast visited Biosphere 2 at the University of Arizona recently to explore future technologies that could help support life (the 3.14-acre facility 30 miles north of campus houses over 300 species across five biomes). Facility leaders and student researchers guided his visit.  KVOA
  • A U of A faculty chair — a longtime academic — urged President Suresh Garimella to reverse changes to the honorary degree process that would remove Faculty Senate participation and rely solely on individual faculty input, prompting concerns among professors.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Joseph Chaplik sponsored HB2555 that would require retailers to accept cash payments under $100 and ban fees; local Fourth Avenue businesses say many already accept cash while saving on transaction costs. The bill passed the House Commerce Committee with a 9 to 1 vote.  KOLD News 13

  • Health officials confirmed a third measles case in Pima County since New Year's Eve, and they are monitoring for possible exposure risks.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Tucson’s Kino Sports Complex remains under consideration as a 2026 FIFA World Cup training camp, officials said. FIFA will announce facility selections soon & the final role of the complex is pending.  KVOA
