COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The first community bike ride of 2026 is happening today from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on the Southside, starting at El Pueblo Center (101 W. Irvington Rd.) with free bike reservations available by calling 520-261-5446.  KGUN 9
  • Amid SNAP and SNAP-Ed cuts increasing food insecurity, the UA Campus Pantry remains open on Level 1 of the student union to supply free groceries to students, faculty and staff. The student-run program, which aids about 40% of its community, has seen increased visits — a sign of growing need.  The Daily Wildcat
  • Brian Baxter reported on Monday morning that political graffiti marred his quiet neighborhood, saying it crossed a line and hurt families nearby. City officials confirmed the message was removed about three days after it was reported (following local protocols).  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Tombstone Film Festival returns this weekend in Tombstone with international filmmakers screening 12 films at Schieffelin Hall while a new pitch competition on Sunday offers $20,000 for a screenwriter. The event will boost tourism and profits will benefit the Tombstone Vigilantes (a 78-year-old nonprofit preserving Wild West heritage).  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Challenger Middle School unveiled a new $50,000 multi-purpose room funded through the School Wish Project in partnership with the College Football Playoff and Fiesta Sports Foundations. The space will host media, robotics and peer justice programs for students.  KVOA
  • Enrollment opens Feb. 2 at 7 a.m. for Pima County's Summer Youth Employment Program, offering paid internships in parks, libraries, and public offices for teens and young adults ages 14 to 21. The program runs in two sessions—June 1-26 and July 6-31—with a minimum pay of $16.54.  KVOA
  • The University of Arizona was recognized as a leader in student success and research impact when Time and Statista ranked it No. 18 among public colleges and No. 43 overall in a ranking released Jan. 28.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Adelita Grijalva visited the Southern Arizona Community Food Bank yesterday to address rising food costs and funding cuts—meeting with staff near Country Club Road and 36th Street as she underscored the food bank's vital role in Tucson.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Banner Health and Select Medical opened the Banner Rehabilitation Hospital in Tucson with a ribbon-cutting on Jan. 27. The facility will admit patients with complex conditions on Feb. 10 and offers 58 all-private rooms (a joint effort to expand local healthcare).  KVOA
  • At the University of Arizona in Tucson, researchers received up to $1.8M from ARPA-H to develop a portable lymphatic imaging scanner to help doctors diagnose lymphatic disorders. The team led by Russell Witte expects the device to be available within five years.  KVOA
