COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sister José Women’s Center completed phase two of its expansion to boost shelter capacity by 29% with added kitchen, dining, volunteer, and clinic spaces. The project was funded by the City of Tucson’s Housing and Community Development Office through American Rescue Plan Act funds to support more women.  KOLD News 13

  • Ugly Little Monkeys: A True American Story will premiere (Feb. 20) at The Loft Cinema and tells the story of Los Changuitos Feos, Tucson’s first youth mariachi group that changed American music while facing abuse by the priest who founded the group.  Tucson Sentinel

  • On Feb. 4, UA’s student government approved a statement urging students who feel anxious due to federal immigration enforcement to seek counseling. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers gathered at Sentinel Peak Park during Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum’s annual campaign (Save Our Saguaros) to remove invasive buffelgrass that fuels wildfires and threatens desert wildlife.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Seven states, including Arizona, did not agree to cut water use from the Colorado River by the Feb. 14 deadline — officials warn the missed cuts could worsen water shortages in the near future.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three Points Fire District upgraded its service with two new ambulances with four-wheel drive and electric gurneys to help patients get safer rides on rough, rural roads. One ambulance was grant-funded while the other was purchased with local resources, and each cost about ($230,000).  KGUN 9
  • Arizona officials in the Attorney General's Office may sue the federal government after the EPA terminated its 2009 climate rule, a rollback that environmental advocates say might worsen heatwaves — a local concern — and public health risks.   • Tucson chef Gary Hickey of El Charro Steak is recovering after a rare stroke on Jan. 9 left him paralyzed — he is in rehab with physical therapist Luis Cruz and is now walking with a cane, with plans to return to the restaurant soon.  KVOA
