CULTURE NEWS

  • Friday a Mass was held at St. Augustine Cathedral in downtown Tucson to install James Misko as the new Bishop after a 12-month wait; a cardinal, 20 bishops and over 200 clergy led prayers during the ceremony.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson’s historic Teatro Carmen is undergoing a $9 million renovation (roof replacement and structural work) that will delay its reopening to about two years from now.  Arizona Daily Star
  • The Road to 250: Arizona Traveling Museum will visit the Marana Visitor Information Center on March 4 and 5 at 13251 N. Lon Adams Road (March 4, 1-5 p.m.; March 5, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.) and offers free admission with food donations needed. The exhibit features a Liberty Bell replica.  KVOA

  • A Tucson teen is competing for a $25,000 academic scholarship as his strong academic record has drawn local interest; details on the local awards ceremony have yet to be released.  KOLD News 13
  • Tucson’s Carrillo K-5 Communication and Creative Arts Magnet School won the A+ School of Excellence Award from the Arizona Educational Foundation for 2026–30. The honor recognizes its strong leadership, rigorous curriculum + community involvement.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Pima County Transportation announced that a part of Nancy Guthrie home street was made one-way while an investigation was underway in the area. Drivers are advised to follow posted signs and use alternate routes until the traffic control is lifted (end date pending).  KGUN 9
  • Local leaders are urging Gov. Hobbs to block an April 29 state land auction for 160 acres in the Santa Ritas meant for mine tailings linked to Hudbay Inc’s Copper World project. They warn the sale could harm groundwater and local resources.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Officials have converted Camino Escalante to one-way travel today from North Camino Miraval to East Camino La Zorrela to ease congestion and improve access for emergency and service vehicles during the ongoing Nancy Guthrie investigation in Catalina Foothills.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at the University of Arizona and NIH in Tucson discovered that astrocytes in the amygdala help form and recall fear memories and may offer new paths for treating PTSD. The study used mouse models with advanced sensors, showing that disrupting astrocyte activity changes fear responses (indicating potential for innovative astrocyte targeted therapies).  KVOA

  • Kino Sports Complex in Tucson will serve as a training base for Iran’s national team for FIFA World Cup 2026 starting in early June. The facility, previously a World Baseball Classic Qualifier site, secured the appointment with local partners including FC Tucson and Visit Tucson.  KVOA
