COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salvation Army Hospitality now welcomes Tucsonans seeking warmth on chilly nights. The organization offers a safe space for residents to escape the cold during sudden temperature drops.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • The first day of La Fiesta de los Vaqueros Tucson Rodeo brought families and competitors together to celebrate this 101-year-old tradition, where seven-year-old Eleanor Obiga competed in junior barrel racing in a matching pink outfit with her horse Pistol (highlighting local rodeo culture).  KGUN 9
  • At 100 E. Sixth Street, owners began removing panels from the ‘Goddess of Agave’ mural as part of a building renovation; muralist Rock Martinez hopes to work with them to preserve his work + local artists say change is normal for Tucson’s evolving mural scene.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The Tucson Chinese Cultural Center held its annual Lunar New Year Festival Saturday at the center on West River Road, featuring lion dancers, music, games and Chinese food that celebrated the Year of the Fire Horse and aimed to bring prosperity to the community.  Tucson Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arizona received approval from the Arizona Board of Regents for a new residence hall that will house more than 1,200 students on campus (the project supports academic and community success). Construction plans are in the works.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Barricades have been installed along Camino Escalante at the Catalina Foothills Estates Neighborhood Association’s request to curb media congestion and ease access for residents, emergency vehicles, and delivery services — the one-way road restriction will remain until further notice.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona gymnastics beat West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 21 at ALKEME Arena as the team scored 196.625 with multiple gymnasts earning scores of 9.800+ in four events. They will face ASU on Friday, March 6 at 6 p.m. in McKale Center.  The Daily Wildcat
  • The No. 4 University of Arizona men’s basketball team beat No. 2 Houston 73-66 on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. despite missing two players (Koa Peat and Dwayne Aristode). They will face Baylor on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. MST in their final regular season run.  The Daily Wildcat
  • At Friday's NAU Tune-Up meet in Flagstaff, Pima Community College vaulter Ketch Sulpizio tied a record by clearing 4.75 meters (15 ft, 7 in) as teammate Mason Richardson earned a qualifier, and the Aztecs will host a final indoor meet Monday and Tuesday at West Campus Aztec Track.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The Tucson Bicycle Classic is on its third day with a downtown criterium today after events in Marana and Sahuarita since Feb. 19. Over 600 riders are joining the four-day race as local partnerships boost tourism and set Tucson as a winter cycling destination.  KVOA
