COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reid Park Zoo reported that Penelope—the adult reticulated giraffe—gave birth to a healthy male calf weighing 180 pounds at 4:10 p.m. Monday, as part of the Species Survival Plan that supports endangered giraffe conservation in our community.  KGUN 9

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Drexel Heights Fire District rescued an injured hiker on Feb. 25 near (W. McCain Loop Road and N. Kinney Road) in Tucson and transported the patient to a local hospital for evaluation.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • DNA testing shows that Tucson native Daniel Rivera Ashford shares a genetic link with Burial 84 from the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre as part of an ongoing identification project. Researchers have identified 14 profiles (so far) and plan to honor lost ancestry by reconnecting families.  KOLD News 13
  • The Tucson Rodeo Parade will feature 500 horses and 73 wagons today as it moves along a set route, celebrating local rodeo tradition with lively community spirit.  KOLD News 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tucson’s Biosphere 2 is testing space agriculture at its SAM facility after an October 2025 experiment grew 144 dwarf pea plants to study life-support systems (researchers say that small crop yields may help in space). More tests with wheat, rice and peas will run through 2026.  KVOA
  • ASDB announced it will move its blind and low-vision students to regular public schools, ending on-site classes as part of efforts to better integrate specialized instruction into mainstream education.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pima County has set temporary no parking rules in Catalina Foothills Estates effective today to ease congestion and noise near the Nancy Guthrie residence caused by media and social media streamers, and officers will fine violators $250 while neighbors are reminded to park in driveways (service providers should use alternative parking).  KVOA
  • Wayne Barnett has taken charge as the new Parks and Recreation Director in Marana and has already overseen ballfield renovations and growth at the Aquatic and Recreation Center. His plans for 2026 include updating the master plan (with community input) to guide future projects.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Arizona women's basketball team ended a five-game losing streak with a 75-67 win over Houston on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6:00 p.m. in McKale Center at ALKEME Arena. The Wildcats will play their next game at Utah University on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN+.  The Daily Wildcat
  • The No.2 Arizona men’s basketball team won 87-80 against Baylor at Foster Pavilion on Tuesday, Feb. 24 to complete a perfect Texas road trip; they managed the win while missing key players (Koa Peat and Dwayne Aristode) and relying on standout performances from Jaden Bradley and Brayden Burries.  The Daily Wildcat
