COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Television host Savannah Guthrie and her sister visited their mother's Tucson home on Monday, Mar. 2 to leave flowers in tribute after she went missing a month ago. Arizona Daily Star
- ➤ Pima County Parks & Recreation suspended daily fees for open and lap swim lessons on March 2, allowing families to take advantage of free recreational swimming this summer (fees still apply for other programs). The pools will open for Memorial Day weekend. KVOA
- ➤ Neighbors in Three Points raised over $5,000 and already spent $4,000 on repairs to Fuller Road — addressing dangerous potholes — with donations and a local contractor hired by residents Larry Worden and Kevin Kassner. They will gather about $1,133 more to complete the grading work. KGUN 9
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ KXCI will host its second annual Baila el Pueblo festival on Saturday, Mar. 21 at Monsignor Carrillo Plaza (outside St. Augustine Cathedral), featuring Latin and indigenous artists from local and international acts. Ticket sales will support the community radio station. Tucson Sentinel
- ➤ Logan Phillips is Tucson’s new poet laureate (also known as 'RECKON') until 2029 and will launch the ¡Somos Uno! Poetry and Storytelling Series at local venues. The bilingual poet, DJ and educator was chosen for his record of community engagement. Tucson Sentinel
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ TUSD will unveil 10 new electric school buses tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Lee Instructional Resource Center Bus Yard on East Winsett Street to replace older diesel buses and cut carbon emissions — a key step toward a cleaner ride for students. KVOA
- ➤ TUSD launched 10 new electric school buses to replace older diesel buses and lower Tucson's greenhouse gas emissions. The buses (funded by an EPA grant, local rebates and bonds) are Arizona’s first to include vehicle-to-grid technology to send energy back during peak demand. KGUN 9
- ➤ A study from UA shows that there may be twice as many vertebrate species as we thought due to hidden genetic differences in animals — researchers say naming these species is key to conservation. KVOA
- ➤ Local third graders advanced to the Elite Eight in a statewide reading contest, showing strong literacy skills in Tucson. KOLD News 13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Tucson Wildlife Center treated a Sonoran opossum after it was found injured on a residential road last October. After supportive care and surgery to remove a bone fragment, the opossum was released at dusk into a desert habitat away from busy roads. KVOA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pima County’s Board of Supervisors approved extra funds for the Short-Term Crisis and Emergency Resources program to help local services. Eligible agencies can apply for up to $75,000 each from Mar. 2 through Mar. 20 (Arizona time) with review recommendations due by April 16. KVOA
- ➤ The Arizona Senate approved a measure that drops the state capital gains tax cap on home sales (previously limited to the first $250K in gains for single filers), which may lead to increased real estate transactions in our community. Arizona Daily Star
- ➤ Today, construction begins on Tucson’s largest-ever 22nd Street Bridge Project that will close the road between Tucson Boulevard and Cherrybell Stravenue for three years. Drivers must follow detours via Broadway and 36th Street (with connections through Park Avenue, Kino Parkway, Country Club and Alvernon). KGUN 9
