CULTURE NEWS

  • The 10th annual Tucson Japanese Festival returns Saturday at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center with Japanese art, food, and live performances including traditional Mochitsuki ceremonies for $5 admission (2,300 visitors expected).  Tucson Sentinel
  • Tucson teens will perform in the third annual Battle of the Bands on Sunday, Mar. 29 at noon at Gene C. Reid Park’s DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center, competing for a radio spot on KXCI’s Locals Only show plus a full home recording package.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scientists at the University of Arizona examined samples from asteroid Bennu and found that large boulders are unexpectedly cracked (suggesting they are more porous than predicted). The research used CT scans and lock-in thermography to model heat flow and reshape our understanding of Bennu’s surface.  KVOA

  • Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said Cesar Chavez Day celebrations will be modified this year after United Farm Workers canceled participation amid abuse allegations + the city is reviewing the holiday’s title and rescheduling the planned march into a rally at Rudy Garcia Park.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Due to dangerously high temperatures, the Salvation Army Tucson is opening its cooling center early and will operate today through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hospitality House (1002 North Main Ave) to provide air conditioning, meals, showers, and additional support services.  KVOA

  • The Cologuard Classic Pro-Am golf event sees pros, amateurs + cancer survivors competing today on a Tucson course. The tournament brings together a range of golfers for a spirited day of community support.  KOLD News 13
  • The University of Arizona Men's Golf team won the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club. The win marks their eighth triumph in nine home events.  KVOA
  • Arizona Wildcats earned the West Region’s No. 1 seed on Selection Sunday— they will face NEC champion Long Island in San Diego on Friday.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Pima Community College’s women’s basketball team won 71-64 against Des Moines Area Community College in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament on Tuesday — Kiley Sours-Miller led with 26 points as the Aztecs notched their 15th win and will play in the National Quarterfinal round on Thursday.  Tucson Sentinel
  • On Tuesday, the Pima Community College men’s basketball team beat Davidson-Davie by a score of 108 to 80 in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, with Mason Hunt scoring 30 points and Brock Mendoza adding 23.
