ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcycle collision on North Sabino Canyon Road near East River Road caused a one-lane closure and disrupted traffic for several hours—Pima County Sheriff's Deputies were on scene and PCSD urged motorists to avoid the area.  KVOA

CRIME NEWS

  • Tucson police responded to reports of an unresponsive man at Doris Thompson Park and pronounced him dead when they arrived with Tucson Fire Department personnel—investigation continues with no details released on his identity or cause of death.  KGUN 9
  • On Saturday night, survivors gathered at Children’s Memorial Park near River and Oracle roads to honor loved ones lost to crime during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week—eighty-five names were read and organizers stressed that no family should feel alone.  KOLD News 13
  • A Silver Alert was issued for 75-year-old James Ford, last seen Friday at 1 p.m. in the 200 block of North Calle Del Diablo in Green Valley—he may be driving a blue 2012 Toyota RAV 4 and is vulnerable due to dementia, with authorities warning he could be headed to Wilcox or New Mexico.  KOLD News 13
  • A man was found dead at Mansfield Park near Grant Road and Stone Avenue on Sunday—Tucson police and fire officials responded to the scene and began an investigation.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three University of Arizona professors were named Regents Professors for their work in teaching, research and scholarship — the honor is awarded to fewer than 3 percent of faculty and was approved on Thursday at a meeting in Flagstaff. The awards go to Janko Nikolich for his advances in aging research, Jiang Wu for his studies in Buddhism, and Dennis Zaritsky for his work in astronomy.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state transportation department will begin a three-year project this summer to widen I-10 and build new interchanges in Tucson with diverging diamond designs to ease traffic flow—officials say it is the largest highway construction project in Southern Arizona history. Officials will hold open houses on May 7 at Kino Sports Complex Event Center and virtually on May 14 to explain the plans.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Former state Rep. Andrés Cano appears to be the leading candidate for the District 5 seat on the Pima County Board of Supervisors — the board will soon vote to swear in its new member. Oro Valley will vote on changes to its planned town center at upcoming government meetings this week.  Tucson Sentinel
  • A bill waiting final approval in the Arizona House will let universities pay student-athletes directly to promote school programs; it uses funding options like raffles and prohibits using student fees to ensure athletes remain non-employees—lawmakers say the measure will boost recruitment as schools wait on a federal ruling on NCAA compensation.  Arizona Daily Star

  • The Pima Community College softball team swept Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday at West Campus Aztec Field for their eighth straight win and surpassed 40 wins for the season.
