COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Student Paityn Thirsk turned her honors thesis into the Love to Play 5K on Valentine’s Day by organizing a 3.1-mile race (along Curtis Park’s Rillito River path) to benefit the Sporting Chance Center; the event drew 87 participants who enjoyed unique activities and community engagement.  The Daily Wildcat
  • Hernán Castro, a well-known local mushroom forager, was released Friday, Apr. 11 after Homeland Security agreed not to pursue legal action over his citizenship application error. His nearly year-long detention ended before he returned home to share his mushroom expertise with the community.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Tucson pickleball players are pushing back against a proposal to charge $3.50 for 90 minutes of play at Udall Park courts; the city will hold public meetings this Thursday to gather input before a June 9 council vote on the fee plan.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson's astronomy community is celebrating International Dark Sky Week from April 13–20 with public telescope nights and stargazing events. Local venues including Kitt Peak, Mount Lemmon and state parks host programs that may require reservations (check local listings for updates).  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pima Community College opened a new 25,000 sqft Building and Construction Technology Center at its downtown campus on Tuesday, Apr. 14, with over $1.2M+ federal funds to train students in skilled trades.  KGUN 9
  • Two University of Arizona faculty have been named Guggenheim Fellows, with award-winning playwright Elaine Romero (recognized for her contributions) and Arizona Space Institute Director Erika Hamden receiving the prestigious honor that highlights their creative and research work on campus.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews battled a large brush fire in the Agua Caliente Wash (near Tucson) on Tuesday, Apr. 14. Authorities are monitoring the area for any further flare-ups.  KOLD News 13
  • Two orphaned mountain lion cubs rescued in the Pacific Northwest are adjusting well at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson after arriving on March 21; the museum will host a public naming auction at its Desert Gala on April 26 to boost wildlife conservation efforts.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The San Clemente neighborhood removed racist housing restrictions on Apr. 14, officials said, ending long-held discriminatory policies + local leaders expect the change to foster fairer housing opportunities.  KOLD News 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Humane Society of Southern Arizona introduced its new mobile veterinary unit—known as the MASH unit—during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday in Tucson to provide faster, efficient care for pets including cats, dogs, and smaller animals. Community donations funded the $130,000 project.  KGUN 9

  • At a ceremony Thursday at Chateau Luxe Event Venue, the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame inducted seven athletes — including Tucson native J.J. Hardy and former UA swimming coach Frank Busch. Inductee Diana Taurasi praised the Valley's support for sports during the event.  Tucson Sentinel
