COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Philanthropist Gudrun Price pledged up to $100,000 in matching funds to boost Tucson’s Gospel Rescue Mission’s Opportunity Coffee and Cafe—this social enterprise will offer free training and paid internships to help people emerging from homelessness as construction moves forward at 3481 E. Michigan Street with its mobile unit already serving specialty coffees and teas.  KVOA
  • The Pima County Fair opened Thursday, April 17 at 3 p.m. in Tucson and will run through April 27 with rides, food vendors, and entertainment. New attractions include more concerts, three new rides, and an expanded kids area — organizers also offer free admission on selected food drive days to help keep costs low for families.  KOLD News 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Tucson police said on April 14 that a man aged 62 lost control of his ATV near South Creeger Road and East Old Vail Connection Road while turning eastbound without a helmet and crashing into several mailboxes; he died on April 16—investigators say his speed played a key role in the fatal accident.  KVOA
  • On April 16th, a fatal crash at East Broadway and Wilmot killed 34-year-old Richard Paul Edis Jr. when a speeding 2017 Volkswagen Passat lost control and struck him near the intersection’s southeast corner; 71-year-old James Alexander Yates later died at the hospital — detectives said his failure to maintain his lane and not wearing a seatbelt contributed to the incident.  KVOA

  • A Tucson man, Dirk Prather—accused of first-degree murder— admitted to shooting transient man Clayton Bishop on April 5 near 21st Street and 6th Avenue and claims self-defense as police hold him on a $1 million bond with his arraignment scheduled for next week while the victim’s brother struggles with stress.  KVOA

  • Roadies, an expansion of RoadHouse Cinemas, opened today at Grant and Swan Road in Tucson, replacing the former Bed Bath and Beyond store — it offers bowling, axe throwing, arcade games, dining, a bar, live music, and mini movie theaters for private rentals.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arizona will merge four colleges into two starting July 1. The College of Health Sciences will merge into the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health to form the new School of Health Professions and Global Medicine while the College of Applied Science and Technology will join the College of Information Science to boost collaboration.  KVOA
