COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Tucson, El Pueblo Housing Development, and Gorman & Company broke ground for Amazon Flats, a 59-unit affordable housing community at 1135 W. Miracle Mile yesterday. The $24.4 million project will serve households earning up to 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and finish in fall.  City of Tucson
  • The Greater Arizona Bicycling Association will hold its annual Ride of Silence event on May 20 in Tucson (aiming to raise road safety awareness and honor fallen riders) as part of a global initiative.  KOLD News 13

  • The historic Louis’ Market in Downtown Tucson will open as the Center for Cultural Organizing tomorrow, Apr. 19, featuring Chinese-Mexican fusion foods and cultural performances with lion dancers and folklórico shows. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind Board approved a new teacher pay scale to cap incoming teacher salaries at just under $66,000 due to a budget deficit. The change limits increases after 10 years and will take effect next fiscal year.  KOLD News 13
  • U of A is seeking approval from the Board of Regents for a $17M upgrade to improve the Student Union Memorial Center and dining areas in Tucson. The planned project will enhance campus spaces for meals and student gatherings.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Cinco the jaguar was spotted again today along established corridors tied to water, prey & cover, according to the University of Arizona Wild Cat Research & Conservation Center. Researchers say his repeated visits confirm long-term patterns seen in 15 years of monitoring.  KGUN 9
  • Reid Park Zoo is hosting Party for the Planet today, celebrating Earth Day, Endangered Species Day and World Ocean Day from 9 a.m. to noon. The event offers animal chats with University Singers, a BioBlitz using iNaturalist, Nature Play, wildflower seed ball making and a clothing drive (free for members).  KVOA

  • The City of Tucson seeks to renew its AZPDES permit for its large stormwater system that reduces pollutant discharges into federal waters. Public comments run from April 17 through May 18—submissions may be sent online or by mail.  KVOA

  • The Tucson Roadrunners enjoy record attendance as Friday games averaged 4,400 fans and nearly 5,000 showed up on Saturdays, following the Coyotes’ exit two years ago (officials plan youth programs and expanded TV coverage to grow the fan base).  KOLD News 13
