- ➤ The Pima County Fair opened on Thursday and runs until Sunday, April 27, with carnival rides starting at 3 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on weekends. The fair offers nightly concerts along with art shows and livestock auctions—visitors can get discount admission for military, seniors and kids—while enjoying a range of food and fun activities. - ➤ A University of Arizona freshman developed Deckiez as a caffeine alternative to nicotine pouches he first conceived while playing baseball in high school. - ➤ Jacob Couch, a 32-year-old Tucson man, died Thursday, April 17 after a hatchet attack at a streetcar stop in downtown Tucson, and his family plans to return his body to Arab, Alabama. They will stay in Tucson for Daniel Michael’s preliminary hearing (April 28) as he faces a first-degree murder charge. KOLD News 13
- ➤ On April 18, officers responded to a shooting in the 900 block of West Irvington Road, where they found 39-year-old Michael Alex Montano Mendoza dead in a parking lot shortly after 6 p.m.—detectives learned that after Mendoza assaulted a store employee outside 903 West Irvington Road, the employee, identified as a 24-year-old male who later called 911, shot him and now has minor injuries while the case is under review by the Pima County Attorney’s Office. - ➤ Columnist Tim Steller wrote that protesters at the Salvadoran consulate on April 16th — displaying the Salvadoran flag on East Fifth Street — mirrored past protests at the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador during the civil war era while warning that President Bukele’s authoritarian methods could endanger rights here in Tucson. - ➤ Arizona Gov. Hobbs vetoed a bill that would have forced local law enforcement to work with ICE—she said local officials should not have to follow federal orders. She also rejected changes to state water laws, election procedures and school board rules while signing 38 bills including new rules for sober living homes. Arizona Daily Star
