Good morning, Tucson. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 21st of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tucson-based homeless shelters and advocates are monitoring changes in federal funding and policy for homelessness services after NPR and Bloomberg reported that the US Interagency Council on Homelessness put all its staff on administrative leave—an agency that once coordinated federal efforts to end homelessness. Local organizations that use the Housing First approach said they will closely watch for policy shifts that could make grant applications more competitive.  KGUN 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cannabis dispensaries in Tucson geared up for the unofficial marijuana holiday on Easter but saw a 14% drop in sales from 2022. Earth’s Healing will expand into the Phoenix market and Old Pueblo Hemp Company plans to use extra product to make hemp building materials (a new sustainable option).  KOLD News 13

CRIME NEWS

  • The Pima County Sheriff's Department searched for 35-year-old Hoi Kei Woo (Patricia) after she was last seen April 18, was reported missing April 19, and her vehicle was found on Windy Point on Mount Lemmon April 20.  KGUN 9
  • Officers from the Westside Community Response Team were targeted by gunfire when a suspect fired several rounds from a vehicle in Balboa Heights at 5 p.m. today, and authorities reported that one unoccupied vehicle was struck with no injuries while detectives investigate and search for the suspect in Downtown Tucson.  KVOA
  • On April 17, officers responded to a shooting near South 12th Avenue and East Drexel Road where they found 19-year-old Antonio I. Rivera unresponsive; he was taken by Tucson Fire to a hospital but died on April 19, and police later charged a 14-year-old suspect—originally arrested for aggravated assault and attempted armed robbery—with First Degree Murder as they continue the investigation.  KVOA
  • Officers arrived just before 11 a.m. at an apartment complex on the 1000 block of East Milton Road where they found an adult man with gunshot wounds who did not survive (no suspect has been taken into custody) as the homicide unit continues its investigation.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two University of Arizona seniors made the sci-fi short Glass Planet using free software for Hollywood-level effects and filming in Tucson and nearby areas. The film will show on May 10 at the Fox Theatre during the I Dream In Widescreen student film showcase (30 minutes long) and the team is raising funds for post-production (with help from Davis de Dios Media).  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State budget experts said federal moves cut expected tax revenue from $612 million to $277 million for the coming budget starting July 1—forcing Gov. Hobbs and lawmakers to choose spending options carefully—amid rising costs from tariffs and spending cuts.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Since 2019, lawmakers have tried to build secure behavioral health residential facilities for people with serious mental illness, but delays in funding and construction mean the state still lacks these facilities. Advocates say the missing care option forces patients into jail or group homes — putting lives at risk and prompting calls for better community care.  Tucson Sentinel

SPORTS NEWS

  • During Saturday's ACCAC game at Phoenix College, the Pima Community College baseball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 6-3 as freshman Zach Plasschaert fell a triple short of the cycle. The Aztecs will play a doubleheader at Glendale Community College on Tuesday at noon.  Tucson Sentinel
