COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Pima Animal Care Center is hosting adoptable pets from Jersey’s Journeys this week (including Asha, a 2-year-old shepherd mix; Cleopatra, a 7-year-old pitbull mix; Snowflake the bunny; and Terry, a social 10-year-old cat).  KGUN 9
  • STAR Village is midway through its one-year pilot and now shelters 82 women, offering bedding, secure storage, and support services for a stable future. Program leaders say residents have clear steps toward permanent housing as the project upgrades with larger tents from donors.  KGUN 9
  • The Salvation Army Tucson is asking local sponsors to help send 50 children to Discovery Camp at Camp Ponderosa Ranch in Heber from June 22-26. Each $300 sponsorship covers a weeklong camp filled with activities that support kids in a safe, nurturing environment.  KVOA
  • Today, nonprofits — Catholic Community Services and The Salvation Army — are using a share of an $855K payout from Pima County's STCER emergency grants to ease a food and housing crisis in Tucson. The funds will boost food pantries and mortgage assistance for families affected by SNAP delays.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson Dragway now offers a safe legal drag racing program for teens, where the Junior Street program for ages 13 to 16 requires an adult chaperone and the High School program for ages 16 to 18 lets licensed drivers race a quarter mile course (fees are $25 and $40 respectively).  KOLD News 13
  • On Tuesday, dozens of pickleball players gathered outside Tucson City Hall (255 West Alameda Street) to oppose a proposed fee that would end free play at Udall Park. City council will review the proposed fees before making a decision on the courts on June 9.  KGUN 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lisa Frank’s Instagram posts hint at a return to its long-vacant Tucson campus (6760 S Lisa Frank Ave.) but no official announcement has been made as the facility remains locked and unstaffed. Local interest continues even as the company has not confirmed any plans for reopening.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • U of A's Center for Creative Photography acquired nine new archives including a collection from Tucson landscape photographer Jack Dykinga (known for his striking desert images) at the center founded by Ansel Adams.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Tucson is set to host the 44th International Mariachi Conference from Wed, Apr. 29 to May 3. The event will feature over 1,300 students learning from master musicians and folklórico dance experts at venues such as Doubletree Hotel (Wed) and St. Augustine Cathedral (May 3).  Tucson Weekly

  • The City of Tucson honored Reid Park Zoo and Raging Sage Coffee Roasters for their strong composting practices in the Commercial FoodCycle Program. The awards announced yesterday recognized efforts to keep organic waste out of landfills and support the city’s Zero Waste goals.  City of Tucson
