CRIME NEWS

  • Borderlands Brewing’s downtown space will be replaced by a comedy club operated by Live Nation as Rio Nuevo and Peach Properties said they informed the tenant about the change—this announcement has prompted death threats in the district.  KOLD News 13
  • On April 5, Tucson resident Daniel Michael allegedly attacked bus passenger Jacob Couch with a hatchet downtown during a layover—and Couch died 12 days later.  Arizona Daily Star
  • The Tucson Police Department's Community Response Team conducted targeted operations in midtown Tucson on April 16+17 to seize drugs and firearms.  KVOA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Economists at the University of Arizona said Tucson’s strong government, education and health care sectors will help cushion a moderate recession expected later this year—though uncertainty over federal tariffs and spending cuts may still pose challenges. They noted that a robust labor market and a large federal employment share will help stabilize the local economy if national conditions worsen.  Arizona Daily Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arizona announced it will lead fusion energy research by partnering with government labs and private companies—using $20 million from its TRIF plan to develop technologies that may soon help bring clean, sustainable power and support local water needs. The initiative aims to reduce fusion risks so that the private sector can eventually build reactors to add fusion energy to the grid.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Pima JTED launched a new initiative this spring that provided $250,000 & supports industrial trade Career and Technical Education programs in Tucson-area schools.  KVOA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Interior reviewed the boundaries of six national monuments near Tucson, including Ironwood Forest, to allow more energy and mineral development. At a conference in Tempe, critics noted Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s comment that the review was not a top priority—raising doubts about future downsizing given strong public support for these lands.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Local governments are using streamlined rules to help developers build affordable homes by speeding up permits and offering gap funding.
