COMMUNITY NEWS

  • HOPE shelter in Marana is featuring this week’s adoptable pets through Jersey’s Journeys - including Yatzee, a 12-year-old calico/tabby, Tess, a playful tabby, Skittles, a beagle mix, and Benito, a red corgi mix, all looking for new homes.  KGUN 9
  • Soldier's Best Friend is working with trainers to prepare shelter dogs for pairing with local veterans in a new program that helps both dogs and veterans connect.  Arizona Daily Star
  • City of Tucson's Climate Action Team assembled heat relief kits on Apr. 28 to support unsheltered residents; the kits supply essential items to keep them cool amid high temperatures.  KVOA
  • The Marana Aquatic and Recreation Center is celebrating its first anniversary and will host a free wellness expo Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 13455 N Marana Main Street, after logging over 300,000 visits since opening on May 3.  KGUN 9

CRIME NEWS

  • University of Arizona is investigating three fraternities — Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi and Sigma Alpha Mu — for alleged hazing that led to hospitalizations, and officials are gathering further details as the probe continues.  Arizona Daily Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Arizona architecture students built a prototype shipping container microshelter to help those facing homelessness in Tucson. They will present a campus design for the project on Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m. at 1975 E. 36th St.  KGUN 9
  • The University of Arizona will open a new exhibit at the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium this weekend that explores humanity’s search for alien life. The 1,000 sqft display includes local photography and interactive activities on space research.  KVOA
  • Starting this summer, on-campus students at the University of Arizona will get free counseling sessions from the Counseling and Psych Services Department starting July 1 (online sessions will still have a fee). The department aims to help students receive mental health support in light of rising prices.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state budget proposal may risk billions in development by threatening key projects in Tucson's Rio Nuevo District. Officials say cuts designed to save $19 million per year could stall the Obie Hotel, Moxy Hotel, Hotel Arizona and a new Hyatt — a setback for local revenue.  KVOA
  • Pima County begins road work on Broadway Boulevard tomorrow from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in east Pima County - the project will cover two segments with phases from May 1 to May 13 and May 26 to June 4 that may cause minor delays.  KVOA
  • A new National Guard center opened today near Valencia + Houghton to help local soldiers and their families with training and support. The Tucson Readiness Center will serve three National Guard companies and assist in state emergency responses.  KVOA
  • The Tucson Fire Department is training six firefighters to use drones during high-risk rescues (to deliver water and life jackets to victims in hard-to-reach areas) to boost safety. The program prepares crews for desert and swift-water challenges ahead of the monsoon season.  KOLD News 13
  • Today, Tucson’s Housing & Community Development warned residents of phone scams using caller-ID spoofing to ask for payment when applying for public housing or vouchers. The alert advises hanging up immediately and calling official numbers (not those shown on caller ID) to verify any unexpected call.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Starting Monday, June 1 through Wednesday, Sept. 30, the City of Tucson will operate six cooling centers daily from noon to 4 p.m. along Sun Tran bus routes to offer a safe space from extreme heat — the program covers holiday hours and extends into September, city officials said.  City of Tucson
  • The American Red Cross is boosting summer blood donation efforts with its Leaders Save Lives youth program, which encourages high school and college students to host drives. Samantha Bivens explained the initiative on Tucson Now.  KOLD News 13
