  • Search and rescue teams in Cochise County now use technology that turns lost hikers' phones into GPS trackers to reduce rescue times from 24 hours to hours, according to coordinator David Noland.  KOLD News 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Independent film Choir Practice, shot and cast mostly by local talent in Tucson, premiered last week at the Arizona International Film Festival and earned the Best First Feature award for newcomer Sally Shamrell (a former KGUN 9 reporter). ECONOMY NEWS

  • Job seekers will attend the News 4 Tucson Job Fair on May 6 at DoubleTree - Reid Park (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.), where local businesses will offer career opportunities and accept applications.  KVOA
  • Gas prices hit $4.30 per gallon today after a 7-cent jump in Tucson, marking the biggest one-day rise in the last six weeks. AAA data shows this is the highest price level since July 2022.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arizona is opening a new exhibit this weekend that explores whether we are alone in the universe. Visitors on campus can experience interactive displays at the Flandrau exhibit.  KVOA
  • The Tucson Unified School District postponed a vote on an $815,000 plan to support deaf and blind students from the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind until its next meeting, with no new date set.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Tucson Housing and Community Development seeks nonprofit partners to operate a mobile shower unit for unsheltered Tucsonans. Letters of Interest are due by May 20 via email; the City provides the trailer free while the partner manages staffing, supplies, and maintenance.  City of Tucson
  • On April 27, the Arizona State Land Department closed 3,689 acres near State Route 86 and West Valencia Road after unauthorized off-highway vehicle use damaged sensitive soil and vegetation (recreational permits are now invalid).  KVOA

  • Tucson American Legion Post 109 is holding a free senior health fair to offer screenings and wellness resources for local seniors; organizers plan to announce event details soon (exact timing remains pending).  KOLD News 13
