ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oracle and other Arizona communities will join a nationwide Wildfire Community Preparedness Day tomorrow, May 3, to reduce wildfire risks with events such as Oracle’s discounted brush pit service under its twenty-year Firewise USA program — officials urge residents to clear debris and maintain a 30-foot buffer around their properties. Additional activities include a Firewise Day at Mortimer Farms in Dewey and fuel removal in Phoenix along with a Home Ignition Zone class in Payson.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Kris Mayes announced a $6M grant program to help Tucson tribes and nonprofits recover from fraudulent sober living home practices by awarding up to $500,000 per organization — the funding from Arizona’s Anti-Racketeering Revolving Fund will support compensation and recovery options for affected Native Arizonans.  KVOA
  • ADOT will hold two open houses to present plans for a $600 million project to widen and reconstruct I-10 between Kino Parkway and Country Club Road, with a presentation and Q&A session scheduled in person at Kino Sports Complex Event Center on May 7 at 5:30 p.m. and another virtual session on May 14 at 5:30 p.m.—Spanish translators will be available at both events.  KOLD News 13
  • Some advocates propose that Tucson buy out TEP’s power grid to lower high bills and boost green energy, with a federal study estimating the city would need to pay between 1.4 and 3.6 billion dollars—saving about $241 a year for each customer. TEP argues that splitting its system would require costly new construction and legal work—points both sides plan to discuss with voters soon.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Pima County Health Department warned that measles is a serious threat as vaccination rates remain in the mid to low 90s (below the 95% target needed for community immunity), putting children at risk. The department will promote vaccines at summer back-to-school events (despite reduced federal funding) to help protect the community.  KOLD News 13

  • The Pima Community College baseball team won 9-5 over Paradise Valley Community College in Game 1 of the regional semifinals on Thursday, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. They will play Game 2 today at 2 p.m.—the team looks to build on their win.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Pima College Baseball came from behind to beat Paradise Valley CC 9-5 in game one of the Region I Division II Semifinals at Aztec Field—Pima will try to clinch a finals spot today at 2:00 p.m.  KVOA
