- ➤ Hundreds of workers, students and families rallied downtown yesterday for a May Day event supporting workers' rights and economic issues. - ➤ The Tohono O’odham Nation reported that border wall construction at Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge destroyed a sacred site on April 28—Nation leaders including Chairman Verlon Jose visited the site to assess the damage. KGUN 9

- ➤ Arizona Public Media opened the 50,000 sqft Paul and Alice Baker AZPM Building near Silverlake Road and Kino Parkway on Friday morning. The facility is built for 4K production, next-gen TV and expanding educational opportunities for University of Arizona students, and it will also host community events. KVOA
- ➤ Due to declining birth rates and increased state funding for vouchers, several Arizona public school districts are closing in response to lower enrollments — officials say additional changes may be planned to adapt to shifting demographics. Arizona Daily Star

- ➤ On Tuesday, environmental groups and San Carlos Apache Tribe submitted a 60-day notice to federal officials alleging the BLM approved a Copper Creek exploration near Mammoth that may harm Mexican spotted owl habitat over 1,324 acres. Tucson Sentinel

- ➤ Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced today that the $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family became legally effective, with about $108 million heading to the state—mostly within the next three years—to fund treatment and recovery resources. KGUN 9
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Pima County will open cooling centers on Monday, May 4, to help residents beat rising heat after four heat-related deaths occurred this year (double last year’s count). The centers, running through October, offer water, rest, and mobile cooling options at approved locations. KVOA
