CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Detectives from the Pima County Sheriff's Department arrested 46-year-old Woodrow Jones — charged with first-degree murder — and 19-year-old Quincy Brown — charged with first-degree murder — after evidence linked both men to the killing of Uriel Alejandro Hermosillo-Gomez, who died from gunshot wounds on West Canada Street on March 4th. - ➤ Victor Manuel Flores faces a second-degree murder charge after fatally shooting Armando Betancourt-Audia on April 25 on a popular Tucson bike path (authorities continue to investigate the incident). KOLD News 13
- ➤ Car theft is a big problem in Tucson and the police say residents should lock their vehicles, take their keys, remove valuables, and install devices like alarms or steering-wheel locks—steps designed to help prevent theft. KVOA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Arizona students are learning how consumers shop in the new Lundgren Consumer Science Lab where they use virtual reality headsets to test retail layouts. The lab opened in February and will be part of the core curriculum for retail and consumer science next semester. KGUN 9
- ➤ Tucson’s Planetary Science Institute named Amanda Hendrix as its new director and CEO, replacing longtime chief Mark Sykes after 21 years. Hendrix said the institute’s over 100 researchers work with NASA on missions including Dragonfly, set to land on Titan in 2034, Veritas to map Venus in 2031, and the LUCY mission, which has already encountered two main belt asteroids — while also supporting science education. - ➤ Gov. Katie Hobbs said Friday she will no longer send her nominees for state agency leadership for Senate confirmation—she will instead run agencies with interim directors. Sen. Jake Hoffman criticized the move as part of an ongoing fight over the nomination process, leaving nine picks still unaddressed. Arizona Daily Star
- ➤ Veterans gathered in front of the Tucson VA Medical Center on May 2 to support staff facing a proposed 15% workforce cut by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The group announced it will meet every Friday to protest service reductions—including cuts to the Veterans Crisis Line—that they say risk veteran care. Arizona Public Media
