ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fatal crash on May 3 claimed the life of 22-year-old Brock Christopher Jackson when his Suzuki hit a silver GMC Terrain on the 7600 block of East Broadway Boulevard in Tucson—traffic detectives are investigating after the GMC did not yield while the rider was speeding.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The newly elected ASUA executive team led by President Adriana Grijalva, along with Benjamin Huffman and Katie Kelliher, shared their plans for the 2025–2026 school year, focusing on boosting transparency, engagement + trust on campus. Grijalva, now serving her second term as the first female president elected for two terms, said the team will work to improve communication by giving students more chances to share their views and by expanding outreach through social media.  The Daily Wildcat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said plans to build a sobering center with opioid settlement funds must move quickly—she has urged a reassessment of funding after Dr. Theresa Cullen will provide detailed cost estimates within 30 days. The center, potentially located at the Mission Annex near the Pima County jail, will initially serve 10 to 15 people and expand over time.  Arizona Daily Star
  • The state sold its closed private prison in Marana to the Utah-based company that managed it until it closed in 2023 for $15 million, officials said—details on when the facility will reopen have not been shared. Local town leaders expressed hope the site will soon be used again to support community needs.  Arizona Daily Star
  • City officials announced that starting June 2, downtown and near the UA parking meters will charge fees from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday — the North Fourth Avenue area remains free due to construction — and the change will free up more parking and bring in money to improve the parking experience.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Protesters gathered outside Tucson Medical Center on Saturday afternoon to urge hospitals to bar immigration officials—organizers said over 200 people attended the protest. The demonstration followed the case of a Guatemalan woman and her newborn facing deportation; her attorney reported she is now under NGO care and has a scheduled immigration hearing.  KGUN 9

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 10 Arizona men’s tennis team beat Harvard University on May 3 at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center and swept every set. They will face the winner of the University of Virginia and Princeton matchup — the next round is set for either May 9 or May 10.  The Daily Wildcat
  • FC Tucson opened its season with a 2 to 2 draw against Selección Tucsón at Kino North Stadium after giving up an early lead. Coach Sebastian Pineda said the young team will work to improve as they prepare for their first league match away against Stars FC on May 20.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Arizona Softball swept Houston on Sunday by winning all three games, including an 8-3 win that completed their series sweep. The Wildcats earned the No.2 seed in the Big 12 Tournament— they will play their quarterfinal game on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Oklahoma City.  KVOA
