COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tucson women gifted cars (as part of a local initiative) on May 5 to help other women gain independence and support their families. The donation (a community effort) underscores a local push for empowerment.  KVOA
  • Arizona Public Media is opening its new $65 million Baker Center on Tucson's Southside to upgrade TV, radio, and digital production services. The facility is entirely community-funded (led by donor mobilizer Lynne Wood-Dusenberry) and marks a significant step forward from its former basement location.  KGUN 9
  • Star Wars actors helped raise funds for Tucson firefighters on Monday at the Rolling Thru Time Auto Museum. The fundraiser supported local services.  KVOA
  • Community groups are invited to volunteer or vendor at Tucson’s Hope in the Park on June 5 at Rudy Garcia Park * 5001 S. Nogales Highway, with registrations due by May 29. The event will help deliver services to individuals facing homelessness and housing instability.  City of Tucson

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson's Grant Road Improvement Project unveiled a coyote sculpture named Dodger today at the intersection of Grant Road and Dodge Boulevard. The artwork sits in a detention basin that collects stormwater to reduce flooding as part of Phases 3 & 4 of the project by the Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility.  KVOA
  • On Apr. 23, border wall contractors bulldozed Las Playas Intaglio, a 200-ft ancient etching within Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge near the border. Tohono O’odham leaders condemned the act and visited the site last week to assess the damage and demand improved safeguards.  Tucson Sentinel
  • On Saturday, hundreds gathered at Jácome Plaza in downtown Tucson for Fiesta Garibaldi, part of the 44th Tucson International Mariachi Conference. The event celebrated mariachi music, offered workshops for over 1,300 students, and highlighted local traditions + multigenerational connections across the Southwest.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Hazen Fire grew to 992 acres and was 10% contained as reported by the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management on May 5 in Cochise County (management efforts continue).  KVOA

  • On Tuesday, county attorney Laura Conover and tribal officials held a press conference in Tucson on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People crisis — the meeting highlighted efforts to improve case tracking and expand restorative justice with a $75,000 Vera Institute grant.  KGUN 9

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Precious Metals Refinery acquired the former Pima Council on Aging building on East Broadway on May 5. The purchase is expected to expand the firm’s local presence in Tucson.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pickleball players gathered outside City Hall today to thank officials for reaching a five-year agreement that lets Tucson Area Pickleball manage Udall Park courts without daily fees + the community will celebrate the deal with a party at the park on Friday.  KGUN 9
