COMMUNITY NEWS

  • An app called Nexus for Hope helps Tucson outreach workers coordinate services by tracking available beds—and pet-friendly options—in real time for people experiencing homelessness. The team now seeks nonprofit buy-in and funding to expand its resource network.  KVOA
  • Team Lizzie Bell will host an inaugural ball to support families in need, inspired by a Southern Arizona family's fight after their baby was diagnosed with cancer at seven weeks old. The event will offer hope and build community support.  KVOA
  • Team Lizzie Bell will host its inaugural Bell Legacy Ball on June 6 at The Treasury 1929 (2 E. Congress St.) to raise funds and support families facing a child's cancer diagnosis; the event will feature dinner, entertainment and a live auction with News 4 Tucson's Monica Garcia as an emcee.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Miles Green of Patronato San Xavier announced a photo contest to fundraise for repairs at the historic church active since 1692; entries are due July 15 and winners will be featured in the 2027 San Xavier calendar (the contest supports conservation efforts).  KOLD News 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 30, the UA College of Architecture honored HCD for its collaborative work with the Drachman Institute. HCD staff mentored CAPLA students who developed community policy recommendations & gained practical project experience.  City of Tucson
  • Yesterday, five students were honored in Marana at a National Signing Day event when they signed on to careers in construction, carpentry, and HVAC to help ease a worker shortage (a promising boost for local trades). Lowe's and SkillsUSA hosted the ceremony and celebrated the students' commitment.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tucson Environmental Services has expanded its FoodCycle program—an initiative that encourages residents to compost—as part of efforts to reduce landfill waste by 50% and reach carbon neutrality by 2030. The program has already diverted significant food and plant waste for use in community gardens and public projects.  KGUN 9
  • Researchers at the University of Arizona discovered a new cell type (hooked hairs) on common bean roots that helps seedlings take up nutrients earlier in dry, poor soil. The finding may lead to crops that need less fertilizer and be more climate-resilient.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Tucson is gathering developer feedback to reimagine the downtown Ronstadt Transit Center in response to safety concerns from neighbors and riders; a meeting is scheduled for May 13 and requests are due on May 21.  KGUN 9
  • City officials explain that multiple road projects, including the 22nd St Bridge closure and Grant Road work expected to finish at end of October, are underway today to keep up with Tucson’s growth + improve driving safety using adaptive signal technology coordinated by several agencies.  KGUN 9
  • After nearly three years of work, a new Sunset Links bridge will soon open on northwest Tucson, connecting River Road with I-10 and Silverbell Road for drivers, cyclists and walkers; the $171 million project expands access to the Chuck Huckleberry Loop (a long-awaited upgrade after losing an earlier crossing).  KVOA

  • FC Tucson brings its free Barrio 2 Barrio soccer clinics for kids aged 6-12 to Kino North Sports Complex (Fields 2 and 3) on May 9 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; participants must register to get a free clinic shirt and match ticket.  KVOA
