- ➤ Street Feeders, a new nonprofit, feeds Tucson's homeless every Monday at Reid Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.—delivering food, water, and dog food while setting up tents that serve fresh pizza and more. The group was founded by two friends determined to make a positive change in our city. KVOA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Federal prosecutors indicted Alexander Renato Young, a Davis-Monthan Air Force Base staff sergeant, in April on two counts of sexual exploitation of a child and one count of theft after investigators linked him to the online sale of stolen military equipment and video evidence showing a minor in a bathroom + he reportedly admitted to selling items when questioned. - ➤ Reid Park Zoo welcomed two Asian small-clawed otters, Berani and Little Frei, today & they explored their new habitat as part of the zoo’s Pathway to Asia expansion that will add a stream, waterfall, and rockwork to enhance their living space. KVOA
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal experts said the Colorado River runoff for spring-summer will be 55% of normal because snowpack and rain were much lower than usual, which may reduce water for local reservoirs. Leaders in the Upper Basin and Lower Basin states are stuck on water cuts—making it harder to balance the river's low water levels. Arizona Daily Star
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The state signed a deal on April 30 to sell the former Marana prison facility for $15 million to Management and Training Corporation—who previously ran the minimum-security prison; the deal is set to close within 30 days and the company has not yet disclosed its future plans for the site. - ➤ The Pima County Board of Supervisors approved $1 million gap funding for the Rincon Manor project — a development near 12th Avenue and Valencia Road that will add 84 affordable rental units for families earning 60% or less of the area median. The units will remain affordable for at least 30 years as part of the county’s ongoing affordable housing efforts. KVOA
- ➤ The Arizona Legislature unanimously approved the Turquoise Alert System on Wednesday to extend alerts for missing Indigenous persons and minors in a measure similar to Amber and Silver Alerts— a move aimed at preventing tragedies like that of Emily Pike. Gov. Katie Hobbs is expected to sign the bill as the Department of Public Safety develops a plan for its rollout by summer. Tucson Sentinel
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A 13 Fact Finders report finds that maternal deaths in Arizona have quadrupled to a six-decade high—most deaths occur after birth and are driven by mental health issues, lack of support, and shortages of obstetric services in rural areas. The report also shows that women of color and native women are three times more likely to die and that extended Medicaid postpartum coverage now faces potential cuts. KOLD News 13
