COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fred Boice, a longtime civic leader, rancher and champion of higher education, died on Tuesday, May 5 in Tucson at age 96.  Arizona Daily Star

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police reported a hazmat situation involving pool chemicals that closed Pima Street between Craycroft and Van Buren, and drivers are advised to use alternate routes until officials clear the spill.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson Police confirmed human remains were found near Craycroft and River, and the University of Arizona’s Anthropology department with guidance from the Medical Examiner will study them for prehistoric context before they are sent to the museum for repatriation (no criminal case is being pursued).  KGUN 9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tucson drivers will save 40 cents per gallon at Circle K locations from 4-7 p.m. today as the chain offers discounted gas to help lower commute costs.  Arizona Daily Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Launched on Jan. 11 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, the University of Arizona's Pandora satellite is now in orbit and in its commissioning phase. It will soon start studying 20 exoplanets to separate stellar noise & planetary signals to help scientists analyze distant atmospheres.  The Daily Wildcat
  • Dallas Goldtooth, an activist + actor known for Reservation Dogs, will address 70 Native American graduates and 600 guests at the U of A campus in an upcoming event.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Tucson Parks and Recreation is offering summer swim lessons & team programs for children and teens. Registration opens Monday, May 18 for sessions starting later this month with lessons costing $15 per two-week session and team enrollment at $30, while adaptive and discount options are available.  KGUN 9
  • Catalina Foothills High School student Hannah Levin won one of only five prestigious $250K Stamps Scholarships (a rare honor statewide) to attend the University of Arizona Honors College and receive $16,000 for study abroad. The award relieves her family’s tuition worries and supports her plans to study law.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A federal forecast warns Lake Powell’s runoff will hit record lows this summer due to a very dry winter and early spring, which may increase risks to Arizona's water supplies. Experts point to lower Colorado River flows as a sign of challenging weather conditions ahead.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Researchers at the University of Arizona’s Controlled Environment Agriculture Center are testing Fungi Blocks that mix spent mushroom substrate with other organic waste to grow tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. The project explores a local method to reduce waste + make urban farming more sustainable in Tucson.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • God's Vast Resources and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan launched a mobile shower unit on May 7 that traveled across Tucson to offer free showers, clean clothes, and hygiene supplies to people experiencing homelessness. The service aims to help them meet basic needs and connect with health care.  KVOA
  • Arizona officials are monitoring a resident who returned Tuesday from the polar expedition ship M/V Hondius amid a hantavirus outbreak that killed three passengers — the resident shows no symptoms and poses minimal risk to the community.  KOLD News 13
