COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Protesters opposing the Project Blue data center staged a noisy demonstration in a Tucson law firm's private offices on Thursday (wearing masks, signs, and beating drums) to target companies backing the project. Tucson Police are investigating the trespass and threats.  KGUN 9
  • Mercado San Agustín marked 15 years with a community quinceañera featuring dancing, local food, and cultural events. The lively gathering united westside residents, business owners, and families as they celebrated the district's role as a neighborhood destination.  KGUN 9
  • In January, Tucson officials recorded exactly 2,130 homeless people (a 4% drop from last year), with 1,269 unsheltered and 1,212 in temporary shelters.   • Pima County released its 2026 heat season plan to protect Tucson residents from extreme heat + the plan outlines nine priorities based on a vulnerability map targeting high-risk communities with expanded outreach and cooling center coordination.  KVOA
  • Pima County Department of Environmental Quality has extended the public comment period for proposed air quality rule changes from May 8 to June 12. The Board of Supervisors meeting is rescheduled for July 28 at 5:00 p.m. at 130 West Congress Street (if approved, the new rule becomes effective that day).  KVOA
  • City officials finished the Final Draft Design Concept Report for the 1st Avenue Improvement Project from River to Grant + further planning will soon set the stage for the street redesign.  KVOA
  • Yesterday on Press Room, host Tony Perkins & local reporters discussed TUSD’s shift to a four-day week at Palo Verde High, a GOP proposal that could cut downtown revitalization for Rio Nuevo, and city manager concerns over water use for a data center near the fairgrounds. HEALTH NEWS

  • Pima County health officials are launching new programs to cut overdoses after figures increased from 372 in 2019 to 553 in 2025, with a near 20 percent drop in 2024.   • AHCCCS is overhauling its Medicaid system amid federal cuts and state efficiency moves to support nearly 1.8 million Arizonans; new eligibility checks, work requirements, and claim processing upgrades (improving data security) are set to roll out in the coming months.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Arizona health officials are monitoring a local resident who returned from a polar expedition cruise linked to a hantavirus outbreak; the individual shows no symptoms and is considered low risk (experts note the Argentina-related strain appears less dangerous).  KOLD News 13
