ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Deputies from the Pima County Sheriff's Department are at the scene of a downed cable near Tanque Verde Loop and Speedway Boulevard on the Eastside, where high winds caused the incident—a Cox internet cable is under repair and heavy traffic congestion is expected.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson Police say a man died on May 10 at about 5 p.m. when 44-year-old Troy Michael Helmick failed to stop at a red light at the South Sixth Avenue and Westbound I-10 Frontage Road intersection on Southside and was struck by a Hyundai Accent, with no charges filed as investigators review roadway and witness evidence.  KGUN 9

CRIME NEWS

  • A Tucson doctor, Dr. Dung T. Nguyen, was indicted on 14 counts of sexual assault after several patients reported repeated inappropriate contact during visits—he is on leave and will appear in court on June 12.  KVOA
  • Four suspects charged in the alleged shooting death of a University of Arizona student appeared in court and received trial dates; the trial is expected to last three to four weeks and Garcia's trial is set for March next year after the student was shot in a drive-by at a midtown house party last April.  KVOA
  • The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is searching for missing 22-year-old Melissa Mendez, who was seen in all black near 24209 W. Silverbell Road west of Marana in Avra Valley and is believed to have been involved in a single car crash—she left the desert area on foot.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local school boards will vote on budget revisions by May 15; Sunnyside, TUSD, and Catalina are adjusting spending as federal funds and enrollment figures shift—TUSD will also hold a vote on a new artificial intelligence policy. In another meeting, the Sahuarita Town Council will review a new contract with Global Water that covers the town’s water system serving 3,400 customers—this update will help guide future water management decisions.  Tucson Sentinel
