CRIME NEWS

  • A person trespassing on Union Pacific property was struck and killed by a train near I-10 and West Grant Street on Tuesday at 9 a.m., and the train crew was not injured—Union Pacific has offered support to its employees.  KVOA
  • The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is seeking help finding Melissa Mendez, a 22-year-old woman last seen on Silverbell Road near Ironwood Forest in Marana after a single-car crash when she left on foot — deputies are also asking an off-road UTV driver who gave a ride near Dollar General in Red Rock to come forward.  KVOA
  • Melissa Mendez—22 years old—is missing after disappearing between late Saturday and early Sunday on the far northwest side near Ironwood Forest National Monument. Detectives are investigating a suspected collision and are searching for a utility terrain vehicle driver—who reportedly left a motorist at a Dollar General in Redrock—while asking anyone with information to call 911 and reference case #250511237.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ADOT said no changes are planned for I-19's metric signs—despite a report that the US Department of Transportation is reviewing a switch to miles to restore American standards. The department has received no federal instructions and previously dropped a similar plan in 2009 after local feedback favored the current system.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson Parks and Recreation announced that 19 city pools will open June 1 until July 31 and offer low-cost swim lessons for children 6 months to 17 years along with adaptive aquatics and swim leagues while employing more than 230 lifeguards (registration for lessons begins online May 19 and in person May 20 at the Parks office).  KOLD News 13

  • On May 8, police seized blue pills marked M30 that tested positive for carfentanil—health officials warn the synthetic opioid can cause fatal overdoses even from tiny exposures.  KVOA

  • Mica Mountain came back to beat Sahuarita 4-3 in extra innings of their 4A state playoff game on May 13 in Tucson—after trailing 3-0, they tied in the seventh inning and won with a walk-off run. They will face No. 2 seeded Salpointe in the semifinals on Thursday.  Arizona Daily Star
