CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A man was jailed for a second hatchet attack at a Tucson bus stop when he struck a man and a woman during a fight over a photo accusation—he fled into the desert but was quickly detained with a $1 million bond. Arizona Daily Star
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On May 21 at 7 p.m., Pima Community College will hold its commencement at the Tucson Convention Center Arena where 4,714 graduates will receive 5,983 degrees and certificates and 1,847 Arizona General Education Curriculum certificates. The ceremony will highlight programs such as Nursing, Liberal Arts, Cybersecurity and Business Administration—Alexandra Marie Belford, a longtime local who earned highest honors in Liberal Arts, will deliver the address. - ➤ The University of Arizona held its 161st commencement ceremony on May 14th and celebrated students including Lady Elli, a first-generation graduate with international impact. KVOA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Katie Hobbs signed legislation Tuesday to create a rapid alert system for missing Native Americans— the law, known as Emily’s Law, was prompted by the case of a San Carlos Apache teen and will help law enforcement quickly notify when a federally recognized tribe member under age 65 is reported missing and in danger. Law enforcement will use the system to share urgent alerts as needed. Arizona Daily Star
- ➤ Pima County received no proposals to run the Rillito Racetrack after a request on March 10 and paused planned improvements— the track needs about $425,000 with $40,000 already spent— so it is expected to remain closed through 2026 as the county considers new options. Arizona Public Media
- ➤ Tucson International Airport is building a new runway as part of a $400 million FAA project that will finish in 2028 + allowing military and commercial aircraft to operate simultaneously. Ryan Airfield will receive new equipment by the end of summer + these upgrades are part of a national plan to modernize air traffic control systems. KGUN 9
- ➤ Gov. Hobbs vetoed Senate Bill 1003 today — it would have required schools to tell parents when a student requested a new pronoun and limited access to facilities based on biological sex. State Superintendent Tom Horne said the decision weakens parental rights and girls' privacy protections — a setback that concerns many in our community. KVOA
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Pima County Health Department confirmed that carfentanil (100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine) was found in pills seized by Tucson Police on May 8. Health officials warned that the pills look identical to common M30s and carry a high risk of overdose, which may require multiple doses of naloxone. KGUN 9
