  • Nittetsu Mining will invest up to $27 million in the Oracle Ridge mine near the Pinal County line next to Mount Lemmon; work on the project is planned to begin soon.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Tucson's Italian restaurant Locale will open its new breakfast spot, The Bakery at Locale (offering grab and go sandwiches, pastries, and full brunch fare) this week at its existing location.  Arizona Daily Star
  • AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced on May 15 the launch of a joint effort to boost cellphone coverage in remote areas by enhancing satellite capacity so service reaches places far from towers. This collaboration may help Tucson locals and visitors stay connected.  KOLD News 13
  • Graduation season is boosting business on University Ave as Tucson restaurants and bars host University of Arizona graduates and visiting families. Local spots like Frogs and Firkin and Corbett's report surges in traffic — staff work at full speed to serve the crowd.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jessica Cox, the world’s first licensed armless pilot, was inducted into the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame at the Pima Air & Space Museum on Friday, May 15, recognizing her lasting impact on aviation and disability innovation while she prepares to lead a team building an aircraft flown without hands.  KOLD News 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arizona held its 162nd commencement ceremony May 16 on campus. Nearly 10,000 students graduated as the event celebrated academic achievement and set the stage for future endeavors.  KVOA
  • Pima Community College will celebrate the Class of 2026 with its first dual commencement ceremonies — a milestone event for over 4,500 graduates. The upcoming event will be held on campus.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Opponents of the Copper World mining project have placed a lien on 169 acres of state land purchased by Hudbay Minerals in the Santa Rita Mountains near Tucson (*this move adds a new twist to the ongoing land use debate*).  Arizona Daily Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • El Rio will open a 95,000 sqft health center on Tucson's north side at North Stone Avenue, just south of East River Road. The revived facility was part of a long-closed hospital and will serve local community health needs.  Arizona Daily Star

SPORTS NEWS

  • Freshman Tyra Starkey earned NJCAA All-American honors in the pole vault with a 3.31-m (10 feet, 10.25 inches) mark at the NJCAA Nationals in Hobbs on Thursday as her Pima Community College women’s team tied for 22nd; they returned on Friday for further competitions.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Arizona athletics finished a record season with major wins in football, basketball, triathlon, and other sports, including their 99th Territorial Cup and a Final Four run. The golf teams now prepare to host NCAA Regionals at The Gallery Golf Club from May 18-20 in Tucson.  The Daily Wildcat
