COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lee Shee Low ran a long-standing grocery store on Anita Avenue in Tucson and earned a strong reputation for sharp business skills and fair treatment of her customers—traits that helped unite her diverse neighborhood. She took over the store after her husband Sew Kee died in 1937, became a U.S. citizen in 1960, and retired in 1974.  Arizona Daily Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Saturday, Bookmans employees at multiple locations held a one-day strike during stalled contract talks with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 99 for Tucson and Flagstaff stores. Bookmans said negotiations were ongoing—Tucson locations remained open while the Flagstaff store closed.  KGUN 9

  • Tucson Police are investigating a stabbing that occurred near Udall Park on May 18 — officials have not released further details.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday, Catholics at St. Augustine’s Cathedral celebrated the inaugural mass for Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Prevost, who became the first American and first Augustinian to lead the Catholic Church—Bishop Gerald Kicanas noted that the packed pews and solemn chants sparked hope for unity and peace.  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Due to budget constraints, Pima Community College is merging key elements of its multicultural convocation into the main graduation ceremony—change that includes a pre-show welcome, food, music, and giveaways—to lower costs without altering its commitment to honoring diverse cultures. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Tucson Convention Center’s North Exhibition Hall where 5,983 degrees and certificates will be presented to 4,714 graduates.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today is a First Alert Action Day because of a Red Flag Warning affecting Cochise, Santa Cruz and parts of southern and eastern Pima County—Tucson reported a high of 86 degrees with winds from 15 to 25 mph, gusts up to 40 mph and humidity from 9 to 15 percent that add to the fire danger. Tomorrow will also be under a warning as high fire risk conditions continue.  KOLD News 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued new rules that let cities use advanced purified water directly for drinking as water supplies dwindle. At least three cities, including Tucson, plan to add the new process with constant oversight (with water quality data reported every 15 minutes) to ensure safety.  Arizona Daily Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • April Madison, the Good Morning Tucson meteorologist, had surgery to remove skin cancer from her cheek and is now recovering well. She said years of too much sun and tanning bed use led to her condition—and she stresses the importance of regular skin check-ups and using sunscreen.  KGUN 9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona Baseball locked in the No. 4 seed in the Big 12 Tournament with a series win over Houston—winning game three on Saturday after a loss in game one and a head-to-head win over Arizona State. The team will make its quarterfinal debut on Thursday at 7 a.m. MST against either Arizona State or BYU.  KVOA
