COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cyclists took part in the 24th Annual Ride of Silence at Reid Park Wednesday evening to honor riders killed or injured on public roads and call for safer streets. Organized by the Greater Arizona Bicycling Association (102 participants), the 8.2-mile ride moved slowly with quiet respect for those lost.  KGUN 9
  • Pima County announced its nine pools and two splash pads will open free for recreational swimming on Saturday, May 23 so Tucson residents can cool off before city pools open on May 31; fees still apply for programs like swimming lessons.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Tucson author explained that his book Dungeon Crawler Carl became a local hit and is paving the way for a TV deal. He shared details in a recent interview (more specifics on production will be announced soon).  KOLD News 13
  • Tucson Premium Outlets in Marana will host a free two-part Summer Sunset Concert Series at its Mountain Courtyard, with the Brian Beckman Band on May 28 from 6 to 8 and Rhythm Jax on June 25 with lawn chairs encouraged at 6401 Marana Center Blvd.  KGUN 9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tucson drivers are facing high gas prices ahead of Memorial Day weekend travel (affecting many Southern Arizonans). The rise in fuel costs may lead residents to adjust their trip plans to cope with the increased expense.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dallas Zamorano, owner of Z Tech Automotive, raised $7,500 with the Flowing Wells Neighborhood Association to fund paid summer internships for Flowing Wells High School students after budget cuts ended the mechanic internship program (local nonprofit contributions helped meet the goal).   • Tucson Clean and Beautiful's Climate Action Leaders Summer Camp offers free, two-week hands-on conservation experiences for teens 14 to 17, with visits to local botanical gardens, museums, and natural sites. Applications remain open for those eager to explore nature + learn trade skills.  KGUN 9
  • Armando Barcelo, a Pueblo High School senior, will attend Northern Arizona University this fall to study computer science and video game development. Ranking in the top 10 of 400, he earned full tuition + a 2000 dollar Delia Alta-Mirano Patronski Sunnyside Foundation scholarship.  KVOA

  • Residents may review and comment on the draft permit amendment for Tucson Water’s South Houghton Area Recharge Project at 9900 E. Drexel Road from May 21 to June 19. They can view the documents online or submit feedback by email or mail to ADEQ.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Arizona Game and Fish urges Memorial Day boaters at Patagonia Lake to wear proper life jackets and follow a simple safety checklist. A free life jacket exchange will be held Saturday between 9 a.m.+1 p.m. for eligible replacements while supplies last.  KOLD News 13
