ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Cody Fire started on May 21 near Oracle and has prompted evacuation orders in parts of Pinal as firefighters work to contain the blaze over 1,217 acres with 400 personnel on scene — roads like W American Ave and S Veterans Memorial Blvd remain closed to non-residents while fire restrictions ban recreational shooting.  KVOA
  • Residents near South Summit Park Road have been evacuated as a large mobile home fire threatens the area — fire crews are containing the blaze and officials urge people to avoid the scene.  KVOA

CRIME NEWS

  • A 22-year-old man attacked a woman jogging at Reid Park on May 14 near the corner of East 22nd Street and South Country Club Road when he grabbed her and tried to pull her into a parking lot, and she broke free during a struggle while police arrested him on kidnapping and aggravated assault charges on May 20.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Raymond Mattia, a member of the Tohono O’odham community of Menager’s Dam near Tucson, was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents outside his home on May 18, 2023 — his family has since filed a civil suit seeking accountability.  Arizona Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting May 27, Tucson Unified School District will serve free summer meals to children 18 and under at high school locations—other sites will begin serving meals on June 2 to ensure access to nutritious food during the break.  KVOA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Coronado National Forest said the Cody Fire near Oracle burned 1,217 acres and was 5% contained as of May 23rd. Crews continue to battle the blaze + a new management team has taken charge of firefighting efforts.  KOLD News 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two Tucson patients have taken part in a clinical trial for Acclaim, the nation’s first fully implanted cochlear implant that works without external equipment (trial conducted at Tucson Medical Center); the device uses the ear’s natural design to capture sound and includes a rechargeable battery (estimated to last five years).  KOLD News 13
