COMMUNITY NEWS

  • University of Arizona departments joined forces to study bike theft patterns and test simple deterrents such as moving racks and adding decorative barriers on campus to help protect bicycles (data shows high theft rates at campus edges).  The Daily Wildcat
  • Pima County launched its free summer swim sessions at nine public pools, including Los Niños Pool on the south side, ahead of Memorial Day. The pools will remain open through July to offer residents a cool way to enjoy family time and beat the heat.  KGUN 9

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Late Friday night, fire crews contained a wildfire in Catalina Foothills that burned 3–4 acres, with USDA spokesperson Starr Farrell reporting the blaze was surrounded overnight to stop its spread.  KGUN 9

  • Hot Dogs 501 has grown from a food truck to a full restaurant on N. Main Ave and Speedway, winning the Sonoran Dog Showdown for best dog. Owner Luis Nolasco said his family recipes turned his passion into a local favorite.  KGUN 9
  • La Estrella Bakery celebrates 40 years of serving Tucson with traditional Mexican pastries — a milestone that highlights its loyal customers and time-honored recipes. The community continues to enjoy the bakery’s flavors every day.  Arizona Daily Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TUSD will offer free breakfast and lunch daily for children 18 and under through its summer Food Service Program at select schools and community sites. Some locations will start on May 27 and others on June 1—no application is needed.  KOLD News 13
  • The University of Arizona College of Engineering is launching an executive training program for military and civilian leaders in collaboration with a military defense advocacy agency + it will develop new solutions to defend against drone attacks.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Wildlife officials say that a proposed second border wall — aimed at increasing border security — could threaten three rare species that depend on Quitobaquito Springs for refuge. They continue assessing potential impacts on this vital borderlands oasis.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Tucson and Phoenix will test a water-sharing plan to address dwindling Colorado River levels, where the city with extra water helps the other (local officials say the arrangement could boost water security).  Arizona Daily Star
  • Tucson woman Karla Toledo posted her bond and was released from the Eloy detention facility on Saturday, May 23, with officials stating that no further details on her case are available.  KVOA
