COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents can sign up for the News 4 Tucson Lifesaver Swimfest event on May 28 at the Lohse YMCA. Organizers encourage community members to register soon for this local activity.  KVOA
  • More than 100 animals (pugs, Yorkies, other small breeds, three cats, and a Patagonian mara) were seized from a southwest Tucson home by Animal Protection Services; after owners surrendered them, they will be adopted from Animal Restoration Kennels and the eastside facility opening Monday, June 1.  KGUN 9
  • Gospel Rescue Mission has launched Operation: Rescue from the Heat—a daily outreach offering air-conditioned rest and essential services for people experiencing homelessness in Tucson starting today. The center is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., providing shelter, meals, and hygiene support amid dangerous summer temperatures.  KVOA

  • Freedom Pool (5000 East 29th Street) closed Tuesday after broken glass was found on its deck and in its water; cleaning began today and the pool and splash pad may reopen Sunday, May 31.  KOLD News 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tucson USD approved a new deputy superintendent role as it plans next year's budget (amid union questions over funding) to strengthen its leadership ahead of the coming school year.  KOLD News 13
  • Tucson USD board approved a $3,000 raise for classroom teachers and a 4% pay increase for substitutes on Tuesday, May 26. The raise will take effect July 1 and is funded through a November override (costing $12 million) to help counter the teacher shortage.  KOLD News 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lightning sparked the Stratton Fire on Mount Lemmon on Sunday night, and crews reached full containment after a 30-minute hike to the remote area near Control Road; firefighters monitored minimal residual heat in an area less than 1 acre with no structures at risk.  KVOA

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Marana officials said plans for a 750-acre mixed-use development will leave a long-standing cemetery owned by the Pascua Yaqui Tribe undisturbed — a 50-foot buffer will protect its two dozen graves west of Interstate 10. The cemetery will remain open for visitors during construction.  KGUN 9
