COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The new Pima Animal Care Center on Eastside will open in June at 7225 E Broadway Blvd as staff fine-tune operations and adoptable dogs benefit from small, quiet rooms (community donations helped bring the project to life).  KGUN 9
  • Viro's Italian Bakery celebrates 40 years in Tucson by serving authentic Sicilian treats and nurturing community ties. Owner Vito Croce (a native of Sicily) said the bakery has become a cherished gathering spot for longtime customers and a living link to local heritage.  KGUN 9
  • The Pima Animal Care Center rescued more than 100 animals from a home on Tucson’s southwest side, and officials are now caring for the pets.  KOLD News 13
  • Owner Danny Garcia of 2 Sons For Men Barber Shop said homeless activity and property damage have worsened at his eastside and Grant and Campbell locations over the past five years and urged city officials to strengthen enforcement.  KVOA
  • Scouts of America members and volunteers placed American flags on veterans' graves at East Lawn Palms Cemetery during Memorial Day weekend, and a ceremony on Monday featured a flyover by the 162nd Fighter Wing and presentations of colors (with remarks by Chaplain Kiven Hardison).  Tucson Sentinel

CRIME NEWS

  • Freedom Park's pool (and splash pad) remain closed after vandalism left broken glass in the water, marking the second shutdown this month; officials expect the pool to reopen May 31.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Human remains of archaeological origin were discovered near Catalina Foothills early this May. The Arizona State Museum contacted local tribes (Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui) to follow state law and protect cultural heritage.  KGUN 9
  • The Berger Performing Arts Center remains open through June, 2027 after the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind signed an agreement with Saguaro City Music Theatre to manage rentals, keeping live shows available for the community.  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The TUSD Board approved a bonus for teachers today to reward their service & dedication. The decision, made during a board meeting at the district office, aims to bolster support for educational excellence.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The University of Arizona will host the 2026 National PFAS Conference June 8-10 to share research, health information and new policies on PFAS. Pre-conference tours will begin on June 7, including a visit to the Tucson International Airport Superfund site (a known contaminated area).  KVOA
