COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eighteen Tucson pools will open for summer on Sunday, May 31, with free admission until Aug. 1 (they will be closed on Juneteenth and Independence Day).  KGUN 9
  • On May 28, demonstrators held signs and chanted at the Project Blue data center construction site (S. Houghton and E. Brekke) as they voiced local concerns about the project led by Beale Infrastructure.  Arizona Daily Star
  • A Tohono O'odham detective's youth academy honored fallen officer Bryan Brown, who was killed in August 2020 just before his planned retirement, at a ceremony that celebrated his longstanding service to the community.  Arizona Daily Star

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials reported that the Rucker Fire burned around 75 acres in Cochise County on May 26 (fire crews worked to contain the blaze amid challenging conditions).  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind + Saguaro City Music Theatre signed a one-year deal to keep Berger Performing Arts Center open as a local arts hub. Saguaro City will manage the center for the next year while exploring long-term plans for its continued community use.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A local Arizona worker training hub — focused on chip skills — is expanding its courses to help fill roles in chip factories as tech demand grows. The program will offer hands-on training to boost the skilled workforce in semiconductor manufacturing.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Climate experts warn that a record-breaking 'Super El Niño' will worsen Arizona’s summer heat, wildfire risk and occasional flooding later this season. Meteorologists note that past extremes, such as 113 days over 100°F (the longest run recorded), signal more challenging weather for locals.  Tucson Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A power outage at the Tucson Processing and Distribution Center caused mail delays for some residents this week — the disruption affected deliveries in parts of Southern Arizona.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over the past two weeks, two residents were hospitalized after bee stings and third-generation beekeeper Monica King said the attacks likely came from wild (Africanized) bee colonies, prompting residents to stay cautious near hives.  KGUN 9
