  • Joaquin Murrieta Park reopened on May 31 after a $14 million renovation that added a new baseball complex, concession stands, a splash pad and new playgrounds—hundreds of trees were planted as part of the upgrade. Parkgoers enjoyed free food and entertainment at the grand reopening celebration.  KVOA
  • Joaquin Murrieta Park reopened today and many Tucsonans visited to see the refreshed space—while a flood watch remains in effect from today afternoon through today evening as heavy rains may cause flash floods. Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts and avoid low areas if thunderstorms develop.  KVOA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Entrepreneurs in Tucson's Rio Nuevo District got a boost from a new grant program that awarded 33 grants totaling $250,000 to small businesses from January through May. Businesses like White File Salon (owner Nguyen Le plans to use his $18,500 grant to upgrade furniture and hire staff) are set to benefit from the program aimed at reviving local commerce.  KGUN 9

CRIME NEWS

  • On Wednesday morning, Tucson neighbor Christine Cariño saw two men in improper uniforms pose as Tucson Electric Power workers to gain entry to an undocumented man’s home—she ran to warn him in time, and the incident is under investigation.  Arizona Daily Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson City of Gastronomy received a $750,000 grant to double its annual budget over the next three years and launch its Resilience Kitchen program, which will teach home cooks about heritage ingredients sourced from local farmers—this initiative will include chef-led discussions, recipe exchanges and cooking demos to connect Tucson’s food past with its future. TCoG will also expand existing programs and hire a program director to build a stable financial base—marking the largest grant the organization has received since 2016.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arizona Court of Appeals ruled that Tucson is liable for the public nuisance caused by a homeless camp in Navajo Wash, overturning a lower court decision that claimed the city had acted reasonably. Neighbors from Hendrick Acres now plan to seek injunctive relief and urge city action to restore their pocket park - a vital local space.  Arizona Daily Star
  • At Tucson immigration court last week, migrants said me opongo to oppose ICE attempts to dismiss their cases so that agents could arrest them, and judge Gilda Terrazas questioned the weak reason behind the motion. Immigration attorney Mo Goldman said local rights groups + lawyers helped those who attended court, which stopped any arrests.  Arizona Daily Star
  • The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management uses four Air Tractor 802-A planes from Marana Regional Airport to drop 700 to 750 gallons of fire retardant on wildfires. Pilot Matt Peed said the planes were adapted from farming work and can take off within 15 minutes—helping ground crews quickly control fires.  KGUN 9

  • The Sugar Skulls lost to the visiting Gunslingers 48—28 on May 31 in Tucson and never recovered after falling behind early.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Arizona Baseball beat Utah Valley 14-4 to advance to the Regional Final with a program-record eight home runs—three by Mason White. The Wildcats now prepare to face the winner of the Mustangs game today at 7 p.m., and they are one win away from reaching a Super Regional.  KVOA
