ECONOMY NEWS

  • Residents in Tucson are preparing for higher water bills this summer as rising temperatures are expected to increase household water use by 30 to 50 percent. Tucson Water advises watering during cooler hours and upgrading irrigation systems — steps that many neighbors are already taking to manage costs.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new wildfire near the U.S.-Mexico border south of Patagonia broke out Wednesday morning after a lightning strike and spread to nearly 2,750 acres, prompting crews to build containment lines with air tankers & firefighting trucks. Pima County officials enforced new fire restrictions to limit wildfire risks amid severe drought & lifted an evacuation order for Mowry by evening.  Tucson Sentinel

  • Today, Tucson is seeking to dismiss a lawsuit filed by former State Senator Justine Wadsack—city officials say the challenge lacks merit and plan to request its dismissal in court.  KVOA
  • Gov. Hobbs said she is reviewing an incident where ICE agents posed as Tucson Electric employees to question a resident on the south side, and neighbors reported the ruse was discovered when a woman saw a badge and warned her neighbor (the state is checking if impersonation laws can apply).  Arizona Daily Star
  • On June 3, Tucson’s Mayor and City Council approved Plan Tucson 2025, which will appear on the November ballot for voters to decide the city’s development blueprint for the next decade. City staff will soon launch a voter education campaign to explain how the plan—shaped by a two-year public engagement process and a May 20 hearing—will affect local housing and environmental policies.  City of Tucson
  • Tucson declared Stage II fire restrictions last night after 522 brush fire calls were reported as of May 23, and residents are banned from starting open fires, using fireworks or smoking outdoors in natural areas—drought conditions and invasive plants have raised fire risks. Officials said only professional fireworks shows will be allowed as the Fourth of July nears.  KGUN 9
  • The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is exploring new ways to improve public safety in the county’s most rural and remote areas—officials believe these strategies will better meet the needs of local residents.  KOLD News 13
  • The City of Tucson is installing over 500 barricades at nearly 100 flood-prone crossings to prepare for the monsoon that will officially start June 12. City crews will maintain 24/7 operations through mid-September—adding new safety measures at Rillito Wash and offering free sandbags at Hi Corbett Field when storms are forecast.  KOLD News 13
