- ➤ A man is fighting for his life after a single-vehicle crash near Grant and Silverbell in Tucson on June 5 at 9:30 a.m.—police are still investigating the incident. KOLD News 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Banner University Medical Center Tucson is hosting a week-long camp called Camp Scrubs that gives seventh and eighth graders a look into healthcare careers. The camp lets students speak with physicians, nurses, and microbiologists — ten scholarships are available to help more kids attend. KGUN 9
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Three Javelinas’s TikTok account — @saguaro.nps — posts cheeky videos to help save parks and boost support against proposed cuts to park funding and changes to the Endangered Species Act. The account urges viewers to visit parks and call lawmakers for action. Tucson Weekly
- ➤ The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality — funded by the American Rescue Plan Act — is investing $5 million to test for PFAS at six high-priority sites, including two in Tucson and one each in Phoenix, Lake Havasu City, Prescott and Gilbert. The program — which will sample groundwater, surface water and fish tissue while checking up to 20 existing wells and installing four new ones — builds on a similar $5 million effort made in 2023. - ➤ Farhad Moghimi, the executive director of the RTA and PAG, was fired Thursday — a 5-4 board vote ended his tenure after months-long disputes with local leaders over transportation project management. A working group will be formed to search for a new leader while officials focus on completing approved projects. Arizona Daily Star
- ➤ The DOJ sent warning letters to Arizona and Wisconsin election officials for not meeting HAVA requirements—Arizona officials said their system meets the law while Wisconsin may face federal funding cuts if it does not change its process. Tucson Sentinel
- ➤ A federal judge recently blocked the plan to close Job Corps but many Tucson students had already been displaced from the Fred G. Acosta center. City officials have stepped in by providing emergency housing for 12 former students — with a court hearing set for June 17 to decide the next steps. KGUN 9
- ➤ To improve access ahead of elections, the Pima County Recorder’s Office will debut a new Voter Dashboard that lets voters check registration, request ballots, and receive alerts for the July 15 special primary election. The county will also offer secure 24/7 ballot drop boxes starting June 18 and introduce a single-envelope ballot system to simplify mail-in voting & reduce costs and waste. KVOA
