COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 33 cooling centers are now open across Pima County to help Tucsonans beat the heat by providing air-conditioned spaces, cooling towels, water refill stations, and electrolyte drink packets (county officials say the service helps prevent heat-related illness).  Arizona Daily Star

CRIME NEWS

  • At around 11 p.m. on Feb. 21, deputies responded to a drive-by shooting that targeted the home of a Sahuarita police sergeant near Old Spanish Trail and Golf Links—shell casings were found and the home was hit several times while investigators believe the suspect vehicle might be manual and are asking anyone with video or witness information to come forward.  KGUN 9
  • A shooting at an apartment complex in Tucson on June 1 left 18-year-old Braden Johnson Begay dead and 19-year-old Manuel Phillip Navarro injured and in custody; detectives say a narcotics meeting turned violent and Navarro now faces charges including 1st Degree Murder, Narcotic Sales, Possession of a Weapon During a Narcotic Offense, and Armed Robbery.  KVOA

  • Indigenous students at UA said that the firing of NASA director Julian Juan on May 27—and the plan to merge the cultural center with the Office of Native American Initiatives—removes one of their few safe spaces on campus, leaving them feeling unsupported.  Tucson Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Tucson is asking a court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by former state senator Justine Wadsack—officials say the claim lacks legal merit.  KVOA
  • The U.S. Justice Department sent letters to election officials in Arizona and Wisconsin—accusing them of not fully verifying voter identities as required by the Help America Vote Act. Arizona says its system meets federal standards while Wisconsin postponed its budget session amid concerns that unresolved complaints could risk future federal funds—raising worries over election compliance.  Arizona Public Media
  • On June 2, the Arizona Department of Housing announced that Tucson earned $2.5 million in LIHTC credits expected to generate about $20 million in private investment for 59 new apartments in the second phase of Amazon Flats on West Miracle Mile — the project will eventually include 89 total units and provide housing for Tucson House residents during renovations.  City of Tucson
