COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After facing a steep rent increase, the Southern Arizona Animal Food Bank moved to a new permanent Midtown space at 4444 E. Grant, Suit 116. The nonprofit saved high rent costs—from $5,000 to $1,000 a month—and will use the savings to boost pet care services such as spaying, neutering and vaccinations.  KGUN 9
  • After a violent firebomb attack on marchers in Boulder on June 1 left 12 injured, the Tucson community launched a chapter of Run For Their Lives to raise awareness of over 50 hostages held in Gaza by Hamas. Tony Zinman led the group’s first march on June 8 from the University of Arizona's Main Gate to Old Main and the group will meet every Sunday at 8:15 a.m.—hoping to expand local support for freeing the hostages.  KGUN 9

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Arizona Department of Public Safety warned that helping stranded motorists on the highway is risky after two fatal crashes on May 15 and June 1—one on Interstate 19 and another on Interstate 10 where speeding vehicles struck those who stopped to help. Officers advised calling 911 for assistance and driving on a flat tire to a safe location instead of pulling over on the freeway.  Arizona Daily Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson Vegan Night Market held its second event Saturday night at the Heirloom Farmers Market Pavilions by Rillito Park—over 60 vendors offered creative vegan foods and services that drew thousands despite the heat. Local chefs Pablo Valencia and Christian Padilla curated a VIP dinner, and organizers said they will host another event on September 6 featuring participants from Phoenix and El Paso.  Tucson Sentinel

  • Local leaders are acting on a new state law that sets construction work hours so Sahuarita will vote today to extend summer times—Pima Community College will vote on a $332.7M budget with a tax cut while Flowing Wells schools plan a $30M bond election for improvements.  Tucson Sentinel

  • Arizona Baseball clinched its first College World Series spot since 2021—after a 4 to 3 comeback win over North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional—and will face Coastal Carolina when the tournament begins.  KVOA
