  • Young Tucsonan Reina Willerup donated her quinceañera money to sponsor one girl in Mini Poderosas Summer Camp — a program that builds social and emotional skills for young girls and runs from June 9th to 14th; she will also volunteer with the girl she sponsored.  KGUN 9

CRIME NEWS

  • Tucson police stopped a vehicle near South 3rd Avenue and 23rd Street on June 4 after drug sale reports and found over 2,500 fentanyl pills, 55 grams of an unknown white substance, and a loaded 9mm pistol—charging the suspect on multiple felony counts as he awaits court.  KVOA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Green Valley residents met at the annual Monsoon Madness forum at the Community Performance and Art Center to get tips for staying safe during the heavy rains expected this monsoon season—experts from the sheriff’s department and the National Weather Service advised signing up for alerts, preparing 72-hour emergency kits, and avoiding driving through flash floods. The event especially helped new residents learn how to handle monsoon hazards.  KGUN 9
  • Local officials in Tucson and nearby areas celebrated Ironwood Forest Day on June 9 to mark the monument's 25th anniversary while supporters warned that proposals might reduce its 129,000 acres or allow mining that will harm its ecology. Community groups planned a National Day of Action to defend key features (such as Ragged Top Mountain) that offer a unique natural escape close to home.  Arizona Public Media

  • A judge denied efforts to stop the transfer of sacred Apache land and granted a 60 day delay for the Oak Flat swap, allowing tribes time to challenge the pending environmental review — amended complaints are due by July 14 and the earliest transfer is set for August 19.  Arizona Public Media
  • The three GOP candidates (Daniel Butierez, Jorge Rivas, and Jimmy Rodriguez) held a live debate Monday at 6 p.m. broadcast by Arizona Public Media ahead of early voting starting June 18 to fill the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva’s seat.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility launched Operation Splash to protect drivers during summer thunderstorms; crews began barricading hundreds of dip crossings on June 4 plus were on call 24 hours a day through mid-September. DTM also opened a free self-serve sandbag station at Hi Corbett Field in Reid Park to help residents prepare for floods plus will post updates on social media.  City of Tucson
