Good morning, Tucson. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 15th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thousands of Tucson residents gathered at Reid Park on a hot June day to protest what organizers described as an excessive spending on a military parade—participants held signs, registered to vote, and joined a later 14-mile motorcade to shift attention away from the president’s birthday celebration. The peaceful protest, which featured safety measures and community support activities, underscored local resistance to perceived executive overreach.  Arizona Public Media

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Pima County Supervisor Sylvia Lee was cited for two counts of assault after she threw her drink during the Feb. 22 UA-BYU basketball game—video evidence contradicted her claim of an accidental spill, leading to a ban from UA property through Feb. 24 and deferred prosecution with an adult diversion program deadline on Dec. 1.  Arizona Daily Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six Native American faculty members at the University of Arizona signed a letter on June 5 asking administrators to remove Tessa Dysart and reinstate Julian Juan as director of Native American Student Affairs, saying they have no confidence in Dysart's leadership—citing claims of harmful and intimidating actions. The letter warns that, under current leadership, the faculty cannot in good faith recommend UA to Native students.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Katie Hobbs attended Tucson’s 55th annual Juneteenth Festival at Kino Sports Complex on Saturday. She offered condolences for families affected by Minnesota shootings and spoke on the holiday’s meaning with local leaders such as Pima County Board of Supervisors Chair Rex Scott — marking the first time a sitting Arizona governor joined the event.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Tucson officials proposed late Friday upgrading the Los Reales Landfill’s methane gas collection system — a move aimed at avoiding a nearly $300,000 fine for exceeding county methane limits. They planned to spend about $358,000 to install four new wells and repair 42 existing ones to meet environmental regulations.  Arizona Daily Star

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona senior Zach Extine finished second in the men's 110m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene on Friday and set a school record with a time of 13.13 seconds (improving on his previous mark set in Tucson) while earning First-Team All-American honors.  KVOA
